'it'll be the rare reader able to put A Child's Game down after a chapter or so.' (Barry Forshaw THE EXPRESS )

'a beguiling complex character, perfectly suit to [Connor's] taut thrillers.' (THE MIRROR )

I didn't find anything in this book - whether style or story - especially different from what you normal expect from the genre.

Like a lot of long-running series in which the same detective returns over time (as opposed to, say, Bond books, which are timeless, in the sense that Bond, M, Moneypenny etc. are always about the same age and experience little or no character development, even if the setting has been updated to suit the readership) there is starting to be a nagging aspect of the soap opera about it - hence, perhaps, the sudden emphasis on her family.

I suppose all that is OK. Many people read genre novels precisely so they don't have to face challenges in terms of form, and a lot of people really enjoy soap operas... but this seemed especially run-of-the-mill. Is the pot boiling over?

I'll come clean from the outset; clime fiction is my `thing', I read it all the time and have done so now for the best part of 30 years. I therefore consider that I'm reasonably well placed to spot a stinker when I encounter one, and this book is certainly one of worst I've come across in recent years. An unnamed reviewer from the Daily Express states on the back cover: "the police procedural novel is given the kind of spruce up it has been in need of for some time" - well that's just nonsense! This book is not based on any realistic semblance of police operational or investigative procedure. Here we have a supposed under-cover police detective merrily going around killing anybody she doesn't like the look of, and the reader has to accept that exceptionally difficult situations justify extreme and lethal violence. Well not in the UK they don't, not even in Yorkshire! If you want to read a series of well researched and well crafted police procedural novels set in the North of England, then you need look no further than Peter Robinson's Chief Inspector Banks mysteries. Robinson is able to craft a fast-paced narrative that mixes both situation and character in a way that Connor has failed to achieve with this novel. Connor bases his story around an unbelievable character that even descends into putting her daughter in mortal danger as apart of plan to track information relating to terrorism and money laundering. Robinson, on the other hand, has created a more than believable female Detective Inspector who inhabits a challenging world that compliments the lead character's fictional existence. I wanted to enjoy A Child's Game because discovering a new writer in this genre is a wonderful thing indeed. I was sorely let down.

The third in the Karen Sharpe series is truly gripping with the pace fast from beginning to end. This is a crime/police procedurel that is becoming distinct to others in the genre.

Karen Sharpe has chosen to leave her lover, DS Pete Bains, and go undercover, putting her young daughter in danger with her.

DS Bains features again and this is good as it gives continuity through the development of his character. Karen's background is given more explanation too and her psychological troubles in leading different lives is put over to the reader in an intelligent way giving an understanding of why her character is so troubled.

There is hard hitting writing in this, which is harrowing at times, and leaves you thinking how much more can an eleven year old girl take.
