Irish author Janet McNeill began writing drama for radio after her family had grown up. She was then asked to adapt the screen play of the film 'A Child in the House' and this became her first novel. 'Maud made a great fuss of putting ready a bedroom for her niece. It was an upset in the routine of 12 Regent Crescent, but she maintained to herself that she had enjoyed it. She bought herself a new hat to wear when she went to meet the child at the station. The hat was to be a symbol, something that marked the beginning of the change that must come to the house with Elizabeth's arrival. Henry, her husband, would see her in her new role of aunt, a being set in authority, a fount of comfort, for of course she would soon establish the right relationship with this unknown child. it was a good thing, it MUST be a good thing, that she should have charge of grace's daughter for a while. However, things do not turn out as she would have wished...
