5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling Crime, 17 Jul 2005
By E. Hall (Nottinghamshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Senior Sergeant Cam Fraser's quest to provide a safe, normal life for his teenage daughter following the death of his wife and son in a fire, leads him back to the rural Australian town in which he grew up. As he attempts to reconcile his loss and cope with an emotionally distraught daughter who longs to return to the city and the world she knew, he has to deal with murder, corruption, ghosts from the past, and the myriad small town jealousies that colour the lives of those around him.

Felicity Young skilfully pulls all these strands together in a compelling murder mystery centred in and around the prestigious Glenroyd Ladies' College.

The charm and dangers of small town Australia are vividly depicted as tension mounts within this deceptively benign environment. A well written story of a decent mans struggle to face his fears, do his job professionally within a hostile atmosphere and protect a daughter who resents the restrictions forced upon her.

Enthralling and thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, 5 Jun 2006
A CERTAIN MALICE - Felicity Young - Crème de la Crime
ISBN 0 9547634 4 0

Senior Sergeant Cameron Fraser doesn't even talk to his daughter about the fear that haunts him, and she, a teenager, trying to get on with her life, rebels against the restrictions he puts on her. He has moved them away from Sydney where his wife and son died in a house fire caused by a bomb that he believes was meant for him, to the small Outback community where he grew up and where he met his wife. A charred body is found at the school Cam's wife attended and where he plans to send his daughter and the autopsy and another fire revive memories of his wife's burnt body. He forces himself to carry on and finds himself in more and more trouble.

A good story full of in-depth characters and twists and turns. I look forward to Felicity's next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a beaut!, 14 Jul 2005
By Boot-Boy (Gloucestershire) - See all my reviews
If you've ever visited Australia's Outback, you'll feel right at home with this little beauty. If you haven't, Felicity Young's finger-chewing thriller will make you want to get on the first plane out there. If it hadn't been for the school-run, I'd have read this Aussie scorcher in one sitting - it's that good! It's also abundantly clear, from the very first line, that Young knows her stuff: she's got a great eye for detail and a real talent for conveying atmosphere - just some rivetting, razor-sharp descriptions of the country; and all her characters are spot on - very neatly and succinctly portrayed. And then there's leading man Cam Fraser - just a great creation. As for the whodunit - you'll never guess. And those last few pages? Take my advice and order up a case of XXXX (make that two cases) to cool off and calm down. You'll need it! So hit that keyboard, Felicity, and get us number two pronto. Apart from anything else, I want to know what happens with Cam and Cecelia. Please don't make me wait too long.
