1.0 out of 5 stars Poor characterisation led to a confusing story 15 Feb 2007

I had to struggle through this novel. It is an early oeuvre and it shows. In the introduction Crichton virtually apologises for the novel. He explains he "didn't agonize over whether I was expressing myself; I didn't worry about art' I was writing under a pseudonym, at very high speed". The subject matter was all there as usual, it was the characterisation that was missing. This is a 400 page book that should be 600 pages. I didn't feel anything for any of the characters - I couldn't empathise with them because they were just names. I couldn't even remember who was who because they were that unmemorable! Not really worth seeking out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a "bad" start 27 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read most of Crichton's books but I was only aware of this one quite recently. This is the first published book that he wrote and written during a busy period in his life purely to make money. Crichton is quite open about this and this shows in the text. It has early signs of Crichton hall marks such as the use of scientfic/medical terminology and clear evidence of a lot of research into the subject being done. The idea behind the book is an interesting one but Crichton had not at the time honed his writing skills to the level seen in his later works. It is not a "bad" book. The same thing is evident if you read John Grisham's first book A Time to Kill, where gain the author admits the short comings in his writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly excellent! 14 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I simply couldn't put this book down. I sat up until 4am, unable to rest until I discovered the answer to the puzzle of who performed that operation! It was a fascinating book, which provided real insight into American medicine in the 1960's. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in medicine.
