I enoyed this book immensely. These wonderful photographs show us that life on the British canals in the 1940s and 1950s was hard, and that it was not exclusively a male preserve. Here we see families with children living and working on the boats. This way of life has passed forever and these photographs provide a rare view of a culture that, in the end, could not compete with railways.

If you are keen on canal working boats and the people who use to work these boats like me. This book is for you,the photographs by Robert Longden that thankfully have been saved by Sonia Rolt are very good quality. Sonia has written many attachments to each photograph which is of great intrest and you can understand how hard these people must have worked. How hard the conditions were for little reward, but from their faces you can tell they would not change this way of life. Some times I feel that they had something that some of us have missing in ours.

I do like this book a lot its black and White pictures show the canal life well. The people and the boats and there way of life. Some of the pictures would make you want to run away to the canals and some show the real toil; that was involved and a world far different from today.

This book for me was a real gem of a find, the black and white pictues are all brilliant, they capture a time a place and a way of life now long gone, as a young boy I spent most of my school holidays walking along the canal banks in the 1950's and then spent some time around Sutton Stop Basin in the 1960's so was lucky enough to have seen and met these people, living their unique way of life with my own eyes, and I have happy memories of the Greyhound Pub, which in those days was in a time worp, but thats another story; many thanks to all concerned in the books re-publication.
