Ehrman's book, an abbreviated and more pedagogical version of Ehrman's best-selling textbook on the New Testament, is an accessible introductory text for undergraduates that approaches the New Testament from a consistently historical and comparative perspective. While addressing the same critical, historical, and literary problems as the previous edition, the new textbook also features study aids including key terms, chapter summaries, review and study questions, and a larger number of visuals.

Review

"Ehrman has contributed a thorough, complete, and carefully devised introduction to the field of study . . . an accurate, yet nuanced, synthesis of the central issues in New Testament studies. The defining characteristic of A Brief Introduction is the degree of energy and imagination it invests in pedagogical sophistication. Perhaps no critical and historical introduction to the New Testament has ever been more "student friendly." Besides its wholesale investment in pedagogical sophistication, perhaps the greatest strength of the "Ehrman" method of New Testament introduction as a whole is its ability to introduce nascent Christianity in terms of where it had come from in its origins while also pointing toward what it would become in later centuries." -- C.D. Elledge, Gustavus Adolphus College, for Review of Biblical Literature
"An articulate and penetrating view into the background and texts of the New Testament."--Marianne Ferguson, Buffalo State College

Simply put, if you read this book from cover to cover you will be left with more than a basis for further 2nd testament studies. It's "the new testament for dummies" without being over simple or condescending. The language is accessible and it's divided into clear, interesting chapters and sections. A joy for someone who needs a fundamental overview of the New Testament. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction 18 April 2009
By Carlos J. Molestina - Published on Amazon.com

This book is very well written and very interesting. As the title says this is an introduction, not an in depth study. Another reviewer claims to have found mistakes about the new testament within this book, I would like him to develope on that statement because this book is by one of the most respected scholars on the subject. I dare to take a guess and say that this reviewer is just not happy with the facts because these questions his faith and what he has taken as truth for a long time, but that is just my guess.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 14 Feb 2011

A great book for delving into the New Testament. It is purely a historical look at it. Don't read this book if you are looking for a "faith-booster".

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brief Introduction to the New Testament 11 May 2012

My wife and I were scheduled to start a class at our church that is being taught by our new Rector. There was a requirement that we have the text / reference book for the class and it was expected to be available at the church book store in time.
It turned out that the book, A Brief Introduction to the New testament, is out of print. Amazon to the rescue! We found the book available, used, at 1/3 the new price. The book was delivered the day of the first class and on time. Not only that, but our "used" book must never have been cracked. It was in brand new condition. Outstanding! We have been doing well with it through the gospels, Acts, and Paul's letters. We will be wrapping up with Romans next week and all successful due to Amazon. Thank you.
