I had hoped that "A Brief History of the Age of Steam" would be a history of the evolution of steam power in the context of the industrial revolution in Britain. It is not that book, but it is an excellent and readable overview of the development of steam power across the world: steam boats, locomotives and steam ships. What is surprising (to me) is that steam power spread very rapidly right across the world after its development in the UK. The story of steam owes a lot to British inventors, but it also owes a lot to other countries, who are responsible for many key steps forward. It is a well written and enjoyable book with lots of fascinating facts and insights.
