Product Description

Product Description

Brian Page spent most of his working life in the North Sea oil industry. Armed with a huge store of anecdotes and first hand experiences, when his family and friends told him he should get it down on paper, he did not hesitate but buried himself in the study of his cottage in the Scottish Highlands. The result is a highly entertaining, sympathetic and above all accurate account of what life was really like for a generation of 'North Sea Tigers' and 'Rough Tough Oilmen'. Myths are debunked, truths are told and there's many a laugh between these pages.

Brian Page has a wicked sense of humour and his hilarious account of the early days of North Sea Oil makes you wonder how the 'black gold' ever got produced, let alone into our petrol tanks. A book that makes you laugh out loud is a rarity but this one also gave me feelings of vertigo (twice - on the tip of gas flaring boom and out on the jib of the crane) and sheer envy at times too. For it was indeed an adventure. I was living on Skye at the time all this took place and well remember how some of the lads went to work offshore, others at the Kishorn fabrication yard and all came back waving wads of money about, often as not spending it all before going back on shift; others, wiser, would buy an extra cow for the croft, rent a few more acres, or build a new house. There was a feeling of the frontier about, even for those not involved and far from the scene of the action. It will not take you long to read this book, because you will not be watching telly, tackling d.i.y. jobs, possibly not eating either, until you have consumed it. North Sea Oil is part of the psyche of modern Scotland, whether one was involved in it or knew little about it. It totally changed the face of several towns, especially Aberdeen, and altered the look of chunks of our coastline forever. Reading this book will no doubt bring back plenty memories for those at the sharp end. It also provides the rest of us with a wonderful light-hearted view of what really did go on out there, just over the horizon, for among the laughs is an acutely-observed account of platform life. Great stuff!

What a hugely entertaining read this was; a first hand account of the pioneers of North Sea oil exploration, it made me laugh out loud (much to the consternation of my fellow commute-passengers). I wanted to be out there whizzing around in the helicopter, leaping for my life off the buoy and tucking into steak and chips with the Tigers! Chapters cover such diverse subjects as the water-wall waves and fifty mph fog to the sewage scraping team via Sophia Loren and the merits of custard. We are welcomed into a world without 'Management Speak' or Psycometric Tests and where tough decisions were made easier with a cup of tea and a sticky bun. I love it! One problem....the last chapter came too soon.

I can't pretend to be technical or understand technology be it todays or in past. This book gives you a humerous insight into how things worked-or not as the case maybe within the oil industry and gives you an easy to understand read!
I'm not a fan of fair ground rides either but I would love to have been in the helicopter as it tore across the top of the sea and up the sides of the platform, what an amazing experience.
Most of all though, can I please have an ice-cream machine in my room!
