Book Description

1 Nov 2007
This is my story - an account of my life which began in the backstreets of the east end docklands and took me eventually through all kinds of experiences and adventures and raised me to a level that many years ago I thought would be impossible. It is a book that should be read by every young man or girl who comes from a disadvantaged background, as i did, but who still maintains a burning ambition to get on in this world of ours. There is little you cannot achieve provided you have the will and the determination to see things through to the very end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazon will confuse you! 17 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
I'm not sure if Amazon, or infact the David Mitchell who wrote this book, are looking to cash in on the success of the Author of the same name, but this IS NOT a book by David Mitchell of Cloud Atlas fame.

It is highly irresponsible of Amazon to offer the book in a bundle offer with works by the excellent writer when this is just the memoirs of some old bloke.

I've paid a fortune in international shipping to get this and send it back. Thanks a lot Amazon!

2.0 out of 5 stars Amazon confusion 27 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
I received an e-mail from Amazon telling me that as a previous buyer of David Mitchell books, I might like to pre-order this one. I looked at the appropriate page and couldn't find any evidence it wasn't 'the' David Mitchell of Cloud Atlas et al. fame. It arrived yesterday.

I might read it. Or with Christmas coming up...

I thoroughly enjoyed this account of Mr Mitchell's life, partly because my own family is from the same area of London where he was brought up. My father recalls the places and names first hand of what seems to be a long byegone era, and books like this should be essential reading to make sure that the 'less mature' of us know where we came from, and what people had to endure around the time of the second world war. We really don't know we are born these days !

4.0 out of 5 stars A Boy from Nowhere 18 Jan 2008
Format:Hardcover
Am I biased, perhaps? I was a neighbour of David's. Although I haven't seen him for 68 years. I can vouch for the truthfulness of his description of life in the East End of London, in the 1930s. This is not a "memoir", this is how life was.
I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone.

I was first drawn into this book by David`s memories of his life in the 30s, and the poverty then endured by the Eastenders. It revived my memories, being myself a child of between-the-wars times although I was a Westender. David`s account of his life on the continent during the Communist era was extremely interesting and I look forward to reading his next volume.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Darn Good Read! 25 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
I read the review of R. Theobald and I have read David Mitchell's "A boy from Nowhere" which I found to be a very good book full of reminiscent scenes of pre-war East London as well as graphic descriptions of his experiences during the war and his introduction to communism in action. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am glad to have discovered a "new" David Mitchell and will look out for more books by him.

1.0 out of 5 stars I feel cheated 6 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
Like some other posters, I was 'tricked' by Amazon into purchasing this item believing it was an offering from one of my favourite authors. Nothing against the actual author of this work, but it is not something I would have intentionally purchased, and even giving it the benefit of the doubt I was not inclined to read past a few pages.

Congrats to the author who is inadvertently benefiting; resounding boos for amazon.
