A four CD box set tracing the musical career of legendary folk rock bass player Dave Pegg. Released to coincide with his 60th, the set features the four big name bands with whom he has spent most of his working life – The Ian Campbell Folk Group, Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull and The Dylan Project. All four are represented on the set by previously unreleased recordings, including songs never before issued by each band – a true collector’s dream. The set also includes recordings from Peggy’s other activities – his time in seminal '60s Brumbeat bands, his extensive session work (featuring recordings by Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Ralph McTell and John Martyn among many others), 25 years co-organising the legendary Cropredy Festival, his recent collaboration with ace guitarist P J Wright and his work as a composer and arranger, uniquely compiled for the first time on the fourth CD of the set. Accompanying the four CDs is a 108 page full colour book, which not only provides detailed information on every track but also includes an in-depth biography, complete discography and extensive additional information about Dave Pegg’s extensive and fascinating career. The book has been produced with unprecedented access to his personal archives and is illustrated with dozens of previously unseen photographs, pages from Peggy’s detailed diary/scrapbooks and other memorabilia from a man whose career has more than once seen him in the headlines of national newspapers. The set has been put together by Nigel Schofield, probably the country’s most respected compiler of “big box sets”, who worked in close collaboration with Dave Pegg at every stage of the production process. Humorously structured around the game of Cribbage (which provided the title for one of Pegg’s best known compositions Level Pegging), the set is elegantly packaged in a crib-board style ‘long box’ This is more than just a celebration of one man’s career, it is an insight into the development of that unique genre of music Folk Rock by one of the figures most responsible for its development and survival – a timely release in the year when the band that started it all, Fairport Convention, are celebrating their 40th anniversary.

Format:Audio CD
This arrived yesterday, and I have quickly listened to all of it (including the extra disc you get if you order it quickly!) and it is, as one would expect, a real gem! I have been a keen follower of Mr. Pegg's career for many years, met him several times and have used him as a bass playing mentor as I too am a bass playing folkie. His records have been a constant source of encouragement and entertainment over the years, and I have speant many happy hours picking, plucking, slapping and popping to him and have nearly (ha!) got most of his repetoire under my belt.
This is a treat of a purchase; the discs cover his career (it would have been nice to get some more sessions he played on, but a copyright-logistial nightmare for Freereed) and the accompanying book (like all Freereed's releases that are Fairport-esque; is that a word? It is now) is fabulous. Full of choice photos, umusing and interesting information and an all round treat.
This should sell like hot cakes at this year's Cropredy Festival (if the rain holds off) and so it should. Dave Pegg is a national treasure and a top chap to boot.
I can highly recommend this; goes well with most situations, especially a cheeky pint or three...

They've Stuffed Peggy into a Box!

He needs no introduction, he is just the best player of bass guitar of rock & folk music that we have on the planet today. The fifth box set for a member of Fairport Convention {1. Dave Swarbrick 2. Richard Thompson 3.Sandy Denny 4. Ashley Hutchings}. is given to David {Peggy} Pegg.
But, why a box set for Peggy? He seldom sings or even writes a tune. He has only one record to his name {"The Cocktail Cowboy Goes It Alone"). Why, such an honor for holding down the bottom for the last four decades?
It is simple, he is the glue that has held folk-rock together since the late 60's, and always with a pint and a smile. Outgoing and happy onstage BUT, humble and modest at the bar after the show. Peggy, a mainstain of two of rock's greatest groups: {Jethro Tull & Fairport Convention} should be the most arrogant rock star of em' all... But, he's ready to talk of his love of James Taylor's music over a glass of ale, anytime.
Four CD's covering 42 years of music. From "Brum-Beat" bands: "The Crawdaddy's", "Dave and the Emeralds", "The Ugly's" ETC. Of old acetates, demos and long forgoten 45'S, Peggy, was the lead guitar player with R&B Roots, and by the year 1969, he was an amazing fluent bass guitarist as known by only a few. By the time of his audition for Fairport Convention in Decmember, 1969. He Played bass, that was felt AND he could fly off incredible lead runs, all this with ONLY two hands!
These four CD's span Peggy's entire musical life and feature lot's of song's from his two main bands: Fairport Convention & Jethro Tull. The whole of: "The Cocktail Cowboy Goes it Alone" is included. A full CD of Peggy's session recordings, shows that everyone from Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Beth Neilsen Chapman & John Martyn, knew what talents the man possessed. Dave Pegg along with Dave Swarbrick, were the mainsays that held the good ship Fairport afloat thro' many a lean year. Peggy started a cottage industry: "Woodworm Records" {in a Cottage!} and organized {with Chris Pegg} The Cropredy Festival, that has grown to become the largest folk-rock festival held in Europe annually.
I knew of this project, almost a year ago, I knew it would be good, BUT, I didn't know it would be this great. The proof, that there is indeed more to come, {as Fairport Convention, celebrates their 40th Year and David celebrates his 60th year} the works of The Dylan Project & The Pegg/PJ Wright duo are included.
If only all box-sets were as nice as this! A 104 page book, begins to tell the story. {and Peggy's own book, is due within 2 years}. As a fan of his work since the year dot, my hero has never let me down. and even the off-night on stage, still held it's merit. I thought I had heard it all...WRONG! "A Box of Pegg's" is fresh & fun. Stellar recordings & fantastic performances, by all artists involved.
