I collect Edwardian/Victorian ghost stories and I wasn't in the least bit disappointed with this collection of 21 short strories by Reverend Bearing-Gould. Beautifully literate, thoughtful and an opportunity to lift the lid and look back at the social history of a bygone era. I imagine many an Edwardian lady was thoroughly spooked by these tales although, I'm sad to say, very few people would find them in the least bit scary now. Some of the stories are short, hardly a page, and appear to be more the outline for a longer work that was possibly never written but; there are a few longer tales which are particularly good and so typical of the era. Naive, literate, stylish, wonderful storytelling....and a free download...I'm in heaven.

Most of the stories in this book were enjoyable to read. Not exactly anything bone chilling for the reader in this day and age but still a good story. There were a few that, (i suppose) given the date it was originally published, were quite hard going when it came to getting to the "shocking" ending. For example in Pomps and Vanities you can easily skip 5 or 6 pages nearing the end when it becomes rife with some need to over describe every aspect of planning a wedding. If you do feel the need to skip ahead it doesn't seem to have any bad result on understanding the storyline by missing these pages. Be prepared to spend some time on this book if you read it entirely. It seems quite never ending if you have a habit of checking the percentage bar to see how far through you are. All in all - Nice stories. You probably will lose patience with it if you are not used to heavy reading.

A selection of specters 26 July 2011
By Susan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Note: I read the illustrated version from Project Gutenberg.

A listing of the stories which appear:
Jean Bouchon
Pomps and Vanities
McAlister
The Leaden Ring
The Mother of Pansies
The Red-Haired Girl
A Professional Secret
H.P.
Glamr
Colonel Halifax's Ghost Story
The Merewigs
The "Bold Venture"
Mustapha
Little Joe Gander
A Dead Finger
Black Ram
A Happy Release
The 9:30 Up-Train
On the Leads
Aunt Joanna
The White Flag

This collection is all over the place. The list above includes stories that are run-of-the-mill, horrifying, bizarre, humorous, and moralistic. As an example of the variety: "The White Flag" shows the need and power of forgiveness, even when it seems impossible, but many of the stories, such as "Mustapha," feature a ghost out for revenge. Not all of the stories were very gripping- I only skimmed a few of them. However, if you're interested in ghost stories at all, I'm sure you'll find one to suit your taste.

Favorites: "Pomps and Vanities," "The Mother of Pansies," and "A Happy Release."
