Review

We are in a place we have never been before. We are facing a series of interconnected systemic crises that put both humanity and the planet in serious peril. This book not only clearly describes the problem but, most importantly, points to the solution. The 'rules of the game' need to be radically changed and this will only happen if enough people, speaking with a clear enough voice, demand such a change. This book is not, therefore, a 'worthy' text on economics, but a vital handbook for our survival! --(Stewart Wallis, Executive Director, New Economics Foundation)

We have to take our power and demand that our governments act boldly to tackle the environmental crisis; create a global economy that serves everyone; create truly inclusive democracy at all levels; and stop wasting lives and money on war. This book will inspire, challenge you and make sense of how the system works. It's your handbook for a bottom up revolution. Read it and play your part. --(Baroness Helena Kennedy QC)

Product Description

This book is about the global environmental and economic crisis. It challenges the whole global economic system and its underlying beliefs, assumptions and values. We need a complete system transformation, a paradigm shift. This requires holistic and whole system thinking. It is a thoroughly hopeful book. The focus is on the possibility of a better world, a more fulfilling way of life, rather than what’s wrong or what we have to give up. Could this book be the best one on the global environmental and economic crisis? The central argument is that we, ordinary people, 6.7 billion of us, need to use our people power to bring about a sustainable, fairer and non-violent world. This means putting our governments under constant pressure to do more and represent citizens’ interests and not those of big business. There are many books about the global crisis. But few, aimed at empowering ordinary people, take a holistic approach. It is for those many people who are concerned, open minded and ready to act.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tomorrow's world? 12 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
This book attacks vast themes which impact today's world and the future. The issue is how can wellbeing for all be achieved in a context where the world economy threatens to unravel, the developed and undeveloped worlds are in a state of tension and the prospect of climate change threatens to create its own turmoil? The message is that it is up to ordinary people to take a grasp on these problems and we are all urged to become activists. The question is `What is to be done?' and Mr. Nixon has provided us with an intriguing self-help manual drawing on the thought and experience of many others individuals and organisations for projects at the local, national and international levels. All activists will be aware of how challenging it is to draw attention to a cause; this book will help people with the articulate arguments they will need when their moment comes. A wide-ranging volume, yes, and inevitably sometimes controversial, but one that is inspiring yet also practical and thoroughly to be commended.

This book is an absolute must read, it is a fact packed hand book which allowed me to educate myself regarding the crucial issues on sustainable development and how we can all by making changes in our own lives create a better world. After reading this I implemented changes into my life and felt extremely confident to educate people around me with the facts on issues such as GM crops, crude oil, co2 and the power which the community have if they organise themselves correctly. It gave me a real boost reading this and gave me inner strength to purse the right path in life and organise myself so I can help make a better world possible. This book I recommend to absolutely anyone it's easy to read, and lays out the facts in a clear format, well done Bruce thank you I hope more people read this and help to create a better world.

I read the book from start to finish, and will keep it on the shelf to return to. The book outlines the issues we face and then presents a number of possible solutions. One aspect that I have used day-to-day are the quotes from enlightened people, such as Gandhi - useful to ground the thinking and provide a mental reference point for the ideas presented in the book. The final chapter was particularly useful to me as an active member of a Transition Town - plenty of food for thought. You may not find all of the answers in this book the first time you read it, but it will certainly move your thinking forward, and maybe, just maybe, one of the solutions will take hold and will lift us out of this mire.
