Pounding drums together with those pulsating vocals showcase this vastly underrated siouxsie/creatures sound, now quarter of a century old. 'A betsuary of' is mainly featuring the 'Feast' recordings that took place in Hawaii and includes the hard beats and delightful tunes of'Ice House,''Dancing on glass,' and the chanting of 'Festival of Colours.' Highly atmospheric throughout, and utilising local choirs and musicianship, this c.d. demonstrates an established act not afraid to do something fresh and completely apart from their previous work. More accessable hit single 'Right Now' is also inluded here, but it's the voice like no other that makes this c.d really work.

finally i got my hands on this 1997 published the creatures album, which includes so-craved and rare 1981 ep (i happened to buy it on vinyl when it was released) which's songs i was even able to hear when banshees did three shows in finland with the classic mcgeoch line-up.
since the first beats of 'mad eyed screamer' this albums is a nostalgic pleasure trip to the time siouxsie and her bandmates were at the peak of their musiciancraft, innovating something so fresh and new, even in such a strange-sounding 'the feast' which sioux and budgie mastered somewher in oceania.
its a bit of pity that banshees never released a live album from 1980-1982
mc geoch period, but i am glad there are songs like 'but not them' reminding me of that time. this album is not a masterpiece but an interesting dive into to depths of most innovative post-punk music ever done.

Stripped of the guitar, bass and synths she kept the drums and withering voice. Pounding tribal beats provide the backdrop, an echo to a particular moment in time, as it evokes 1980's squatting in Cambridge opposite the Co-oP in the autumnal months of one long cold spell. Open hearth fire, and, wax candles and one small tinny record player with this this spinning incessantly. The backdrop to a moment in time as the hearth flames of the past lit up the autumnal October room. Wild Thing, you make my heart sing.

Hearing it again, thirty years later, time has shifted and now it sounds expansive played across a decent stereo. Still have the original ep somehwere, lying battered and scratched to a long slow sonic death as the sounds linked to substance uses conjuring up other low lying lands.

Haunting, in its simplicity and full of complex drum rhythms, undertaken a time when people explored new inner realms, the sounds echo around the room creating a sense of unease, a sacrifice to an inner demon the "mad eyed screamer. This is tort, pounding and based upon her reputation to push the boundaries.

The later music is less abrasive as she took an odyssey to discover other realms and found Hawaii before it was covered in ice and heavily despoiled. Linking to the tribal Jungian elements of the feast and customs embroiled within births, marriages and deaths, the older less sanitised realms leap out of the flames to dance.

A brave avenue to explore, back then and could not think of a modern artist who would take the same risks.

If your a Siouxsie fan then this is a must for you. The best of Siouxsie's collaboration with her then husband, the extremely talented Budgie. The unmistakable drum based sound, overlaid with Siouxsie's luxurious vocals and dark lyrics.

Not the easiest album to explore but the audacity is compelling and the moments when the sounds come together are amazing. A great artistry. I applaud it and occassionaly love it.

I remember The Creatures' records very well - they were a bigger proposition than a lot of latter-day listeners might realise, regularly featuring on Top of the Pops, etc - but I hadn't heard any of them for a VERY long time until I picked this exhaustive (& excellent) collection up for a couple of quid when my local Fopp was closing down a few years ago.

I wasn't sure how well their music would stand up 3 decades on, but this compilation of debut album Feast & their earliest singles is stunning from beginning to end, & I'm tempted to profer that it's dated far better than The Banshees' own albums, particularly the contemporaneous Juju & Hyaena which, though imbued with a striking period charm, sound surprisingly time-warped now.

I don't know whether these initial Creatures experiments have been remastered or not, but their percussion-led minimalism sounds monstrous on CD, & Siouxsie's voice has never sounded better.
