Book Description

6 Jan 2005
New York City, the unique metropolis that Le Corbusier has called “a beautiful catastrophe,” is a natural home to Bruce Gilden. Since 1981, Gilden has been roaming the streets of the city, capturing its characters and eccentricities with his confrontational, highly energetic style and exuberant vision. In his new opus, A Beautiful Catastrophe, Magnum photographer Bruce Gilden celebrates a trademark style with abandon, firmly ensconcing him in the pantheon of New York City street poets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gildens masterpiece 22 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
Anyone with even the slightest interest in street photography should view the stunning images in this amazing book,
Gildens style might not be everyones cup of tea in the world of photography but if like me you like upfront unposed real street images then this book is a must.

4.0 out of 5 stars another excellent installment, but not the best 14 Jun 2006
By jack kerr - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
this is a good book, no doubt by a master of the medium, but in the series of similarly sized and designed books by gilden this just isn't probably his best. see 'go' and 'coney island' for his most brilliant books.

as for his publishing and design, it has become a part of his genius. i only wish the bindings were a bit stronger, my copy split noticeably after a few readings.
5.0 out of 5 stars Diane Arbus inspired.... 9 Mar 2011

A look at the more human side of imamagry. When I look at a "live broadcast" the performers always look pretty perfect but when I pause the images I often see a mouth half open and eyes half closed, a less flattering look at our ordinary moments.
4.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful catastrophe 16 Nov 2010

beautiful pictures with a catastrophe for binding. i could live with binding wearing out after repeated viewings, but it fell apart after two. im still giving it four stars though in support of bruce gilden, one of the boldest street photographers of our time. the pictures dont compare to the coney island series, but they are still really remarkable.
