Product Description

What could cause a mother to believe that giving away her newborn baby is her only option? Cathy Glass is about to find out. From author of Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller Damaged comes a harrowing and moving memoir about tiny Harrison, left in Cathy’s care, and the potentially fatal family secret of his beginnings.

When Cathy is first asked to foster one-day old Harrison her only concern is if she will remember how to look after a baby. But upon collecting Harrison from the hospital, Cathy realises she has more to worry than she thought when she discovers that his background is shrouded in secrecy.

She isn’t told why Harrison is in foster care and his social worker says only a few are aware of his very existence, and if his whereabouts became known his life, and that of his parents, could be in danger. Cathy tries to put her worries aside as she looks after Harrison, a beautiful baby, who is alert and engaging. Cathy and her children quickly bond with Harrison although they know that, inevitably, he will eventually be adopted.

But when a woman Cathy doesn’t know starts appearing in the street outside her house acting suspiciously, Cathy fears for her own family’s safety and demands some answers from Harrison’s social worker. The social worker tells Cathy a little but what she says is very disturbing . How is this woman connected to Harrison and can she answer the questions that will affect Harrison’s whole life?

5.0 out of 5 stars Another gripping read from Cathy Glass! 25 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read all of Cathy Glass' true stories - and found them all absolutely absorbing. This one is no different. From the very first page, Cathy invites you into her home and takes you on a journey with her and her own children plus a brand new baby she is about to foster: baby Harrison.

Unlike some of her other memoirs, this book centres on a newborn baby that has not been subject to any kind of trauma or abuse, and is developmentally normal. Part of the story includes another child who has come to Cathy for a very short stay, but mainly the story is about Harrison and the secretive circumstances leading up to his placement in foster care. These circumstances are not revealed until late in the story - therefore it is a gripping read, as usual with Cathy Glass.

Cathy's books are always very hard to put down - but I did manage to make this last 3 days! I always feel a little sad when I finish a Cathy Glass book and eagerly await the next

2.0 out of 5 stars BORING!!!!! 8 Nov 2012
By Hoodoo
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I brought this book after reading lots of really good reviews on here, i feel like i have just read a completely different book!
The constant describing of EVERY tiny detail of day to day life became very, very dull by the end, and i felt like i was wading through treacle trying to get the damn book finished.
If you are thinking of becoming a foster parent at any point in the future this will probably be a good read as every millisecond of it is described, if not i wouldn't bother.

3.0 out of 5 stars How your writing style can let down a good story 30 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a very touching story and I admire the foster mother for the work that she does. But this book is badly let down by the writing style. It is at times laborious, going into every tiny detail of the family's daily life, and at other times patronising (do we really, really need to be told what n/a stands for, for example? Really?). I stuck with the story, hoping there was going to be more of a twist. Although fortunate for baby Harry, other readers like me might be left disappointed that a story with rather mysterious, exciting beginnings simply slowly peters out.
