4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Dark Jimbo on 7 Jun. 2014
Format: Paperback
An 'odds and sods' collection of four ABC Warriors stories that don't fit neatly anywhere else. None of them fit together particulary well, but the overall quality is high. The first, Red Planet Blues, is a story set during the Warrior's original mission on Mars. Written by Alan Moore, this remains the only instance of anyone other than the character's creator, Pat Mills, writing them (apart from a few one-off Ro-Busters tales). It's only seven pages long but, as you'd expect from a writer of such pedigree, a little tour-de-force. Forlorn, thought-provoking and tragic, it's a story that demonstrates well how Hammerstein, robot though he may be, is one of the most human characters in 2000AD. Superb colour art by Steve Dillon, too. Dishonourable Discharge, with lovely art by Kev Walker, is an origin story for Blackblood, the perennial bad seed of the Warriors. Joe Pineapples' Greatest Hits, with art by Tom Carney, is the most lightweight story of the lot but neverthless a lot of fun.

The last story provides the real meat of the collection and is, one suspects, the real justification for this collection's existence. The ten-part Deadlock solo series, by Mills and Henry Flint, is an epilogue of sorts for the Nemesis the Warlock saga (that the Warrior's adventures have occassionally crossed over with). In the aftermath of Nemesis and Torquemada's deaths, the formerly draconian Termight has opened its barriers to extraterrestrial life and tensions are high as human and alien are suddenly thrown together side by side. Presdent Purity Brown is trying her best to maintain order in this brave new society but it isn't proving easy.

ABC Warriors is my favorite genre of graphic novel, I read every one as it comes out. Due mainly to the writing skills of Pat Mills. Highly recommended read.
