Book Description

14 April 2011
From the moment he joined THE SUNDAY TIMES, A.A. Gill has wanted to interview places - to discover the personality of a place as if it were a person, to listen and talk to it. A selection of the very best pieces that Gill has written over the past five years, A.A. GILL IS FURTHER AWAY is a wonderfully insightful and funny compendium of travel writing taken mostly from THE SUNDAY TIMES, but also from GQ, TATLER and CONDE NAST TRAVELLER. Gill writes with a clarity and acerbity that conveys the intensity of his experiences in his travels around the world. His book includes essays on Sudan, India, Cuba, Germany and California. In each piece, there is a central image A.A. Gill uses as the key to unlocking the personality of a place.

Product Description

Review

Gill applies his acerbity on Sudan, India, Cuba, Germany and California, uncovering the personality of each place much as he does with his celebrity interviewees (NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELLER )

(Gill) never fails to write with power and wit (LONELY PLANET MAGAZINE )

Describing each location with equal wonder, he makes Morris dancers sound as exotic as Madagascan tribes (SHORTLIST )

Whatever his methods, not many writers can so succinctly drill down into a destination...punctuated with thoughts and ideas pulsating with wisdom (Peter Myers BUSINESS TRAVELLER REUTERS )

If you like travel, brilliant writing and truly original thinking, then join the queue. (Alice B-B VANITY FAIR )

As this collection of stories shows, few writers can get under the skin of a place as evocatively or effectively. (Peter Moore WANDERLUST )

A highly diverting collection (GOOD BOOK GUIDE )

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book by a great writer 12 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
"A.A. Gill is Further Away" is a marvellous book which I intend to re-read. Most of A A Gill'S books are better on second and even third reading. His sentences have so many meanings that you miss at least half of them the first time around. Gill creates images and definitions that strike you like lightning. He shows in a new ligth whatever he casts his eyes on. A journalist? He has great intelligence, skill and emotional range - his sentences live. He is to my mind one of the best living writers. Everythign he writes is a pleasure to read, and more often than not, it gives the reader the thrill of gaining new insights. I read and re-read him for inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5* AA 11 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback
The latest collection of AA's writing about places near and far takes in not just countries and peoples but themes too - like 'being old' for example. On all counts AA is brilliantly observant - his take on things always that bit more surprising and challenging. Great reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Belgium 27 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
A lively read but it's a shame that the section on Belgium is so badly researched. I lived there for nearly 6 months and never encountered the anti-Chinese attitude that Gill thinks is prevalent in Brussells. (Sure, Sino-Belgian relations have been fraught since around 1975 but for most of us it didn't affect our everyday lives). Talk of it being rife in the country is an exageration. Otherwise, not a bad read, occasionally funny insights - I laughed out loud at his comparison of Xeng-di with a mushroom tortilla in a Bruges cafe, but a disappointment for anyone with more than a basic understanding of Chinese culture and politics.
