I've been a fan of Toman Kalnoky ever since hearing Keasbey Nights by Catch 22. Ever since, I've fallen in love with his music, buying Everything Goes Numb and Somewhere In The Between by Streetlight Manifesto. I'm sure you can understand my excitement when I found out he'd be releasing 99 songs over a number of albums.

And what do I think of Volume I? I love it.

I was worried at when I found out this would be an album of solely covers. Covers of songs that influenced Tomas over the years. Firstly because I would be wasting my money to buy songs I already own, and secondly because Streetlight might've ruined the originals for me.
But then I found out these covers, while have influenced Tomas, are nothing like his music. And Streetlight would be playing them in their own style!

So here we have one of the greatest Third Wave Ska bands around, playing classics such as Just by Radiohead, Linoleum by NOFX, Such Great Heights by The Postal Service and Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard by Paul Simon (of Simon & Garfunkel). But they didn't just copy the originals, they took them, and turned them into Streetlight's regular upbeat Ska with a driving bass line, fast lyrics and impressive brass harmonies.

So overall, it this an album worth purchasing? For a Streelight fan, yes. For a Ska fan, yes! And for someone who wants a good beat to listen to while driving in the car? Sure. They'll enjoy it too!

Good, not great 27 Jun 2010

Cover album by one of the best 3rd wave ska bands there is, but they are geared up for playing their original material more than covering other artists. This album is a good listen and is nice to hear there interpretations of some great songs however this album is not going down in the history books.

Like others I have been a fan of Tomas Kalnoky since the release of Keasbey Nights and I love his attitude to writing songs and making music. This is a collection of music that has influenced Tomas and his various bands from the early days. It is, we are led to believe, the first eleven of ninety nine?...

Long standing fans of Kalnoky wont find much new here though, the first time i ever saw streetlight back in 2005 they played "hell" live so its obvious it was going to appear here. They have also played "linoleum" live when I have seen them and the cover of "me and julio" has been played on US tours as youtube testifies... so there are a few tracks which might leave you feeling a bit short-changed... and thats before we mention "they provide the paint", so four from eleven that the more die hard fans will recognise but will undoubtedly be glad to have on cd.

However, there are some really great covers on this album too. "Just" is the obvious example, its simply epic, its clear that the band enjoyed playing this one and it gets the full streetlight treatment. it was brave to cover this song. too many bands wont cover radiohead pretending its out of respect when in reality its because they cant do the song justice. Kalnoky et al attack the song hard and face on. The other songs are covered in the same vein, a nod to the original but then a very definate twist, whether its the horns or the infamous gang vocals that streetlight do so well. Even songs which you think cant be that different, "skyscraper", "punk rock girl", songs by the likes of NOFX and Bad Religion are not obvious covers but arranged to suit this band and they do them very well.

The album is an interesting dip into Kalnoky's influences and showcases the talent of the band, enjoy.
