I've been playing this album non-stop for the last four days and conclude that this is yet another excellent release from one of Britain's most underrated bands. Yet more of their insight, wit and imagination. Half Man Half Biscuit say say more about the absurdities, frustrations and mundanities of life in modern Britain than any other band I know.

What other songwriter would clarity the correct etiquette for drivers to allow a pedestrian to cross the road? In 'L'Enfer C'Est Les Autre', Nigel Blackwell (Half Man Half Biscuit main man and songwriter) explains that a driver shouldn't use their index finger (drives me mad too). Nope, the driver should make their invitation with an outstretched palm.

Final track, "Rock And Roll Is Full Of Bad Wools", is my current favourite. I love it when Nigel Blackwell lets rip about things that vex him. How about this for an opening verse: "He's sitting on a so-called Soccer Sofa, On a Saturday morning, Having the so-called banter with the Preston, Touching base with fellow guest Heston, How cool does he appear? And how cool is his career? He's gonna talk about his songs, And his favourite footie teams, That's England, Chelsea, Acky Stanley, And all the band love watching Barca" All sung in Nigel Blackwell's best sneer. Needless to say things don't quite go to plan for the protagonist as you'll find out if and when you hear the rest of the song.

This album is chock-a-block with witty, acerbic, touching, scathing, singalong tunes that will enrich your life. Another Half Man Half Biscuit recording to treasure. Long may they continue to reign over us. Half Man Half Biscuit are national treasures. If you only know Half Man Half Biscuit for their early "hits", then do yourself a favour and get reacquainted. If you don't know them at all, then this is as good a starting point as any.

Superb 27 Sep 2011

I bought the Vinyl version (with cd) straight from Probe, and received the album last week.

I have raced through the trcks twice and am now taking my time to savour them in more detail. The album echoes a number of the earlier ones, especially 'A country practice' from 4 lads. It also reminds me of Back in the DHSS. This is no bad thing, although there isn't really anything like a duff HMHB album.

The production values are supposed to very good. I dont think this matters all that much - if you want clean production above musicality HMHB aren't for you.

Highlights? I like RSVP, Joy in Leeuwarden, Fun Day in the Park and Descent of the Stiperstones. All songs are good and sometimes it takes a year or so to get the odd song in its full glory!

If you have never listened to HMHB you could do worse than start here. If I were you I would buy all of then NOW. If you can only afford three get this one, Actung Bono and Back in the DHSS. Good times.

Not for beginners 18 Nov 2011

Format:Audio CD
After the relative progression of Achtung Bono and CSI: Ambleside (real pop songs, no less!), (Crimond) sees the Biscuits firmly back in insular mode; scowly and negative, very much This Leaden Pall territory.

And frankly, there's more here that's disposable than has been on an HMHB release for a very long time. The mid-album triumvirate of Excavating Rita, Fun Day At The Park and ...Stiperstones won't be remembered for long. But even at their most pedestrian Nigel has a comic laureates way with words and the highlights are as good as anything he's produced before.

Overall i'm slightly downbeat, as the whole thing is somewhat depressing; from drab and morbid art work; minimal and dull, to an overbearing creepiness on many of the songs. This one doesn't make me sing along or smile as much as i expected. And sometimes i do wish, just for one album, HMHB would pull out all the bells and whistles and give us that catchy, acerbic, well produced, nicely packaged, indie rock masterpiece they so ardently seem to want to avoid making.

But then, that wouldn't be HMHB, would it?

So, while nothing HMHB have done can be classed as bad, this is good but definitely not for beginners.

Another gem from HMHB with all the usual well-merited targets for vitriol.
This band's lyrics are worth their weight in gold.

Is it any good?
This album is good. I would go as far as to say very good. Not quite as far as very, very good as I would never rate an album this way. Read more
