Gave this book 2 stars because I didn't have the patients to finish it.

Very self indulgent, predictable novel that goes to far into the old " unpublished writer with issues" theme that honestly left me thinking why the hell did I start reading this book.

A story for the sake of it, it really didnt even in the slightest make me want to finish the book because, quite frankly, I didn't care what happened to Bruno "cliche after boring blah" Dante or the ansomble of equally as predictable, equally as bland characters.

Dan Fante once more puts us in the shoes of the angry, alcoholic misfit Bruno Dante. A follow up to the first Dante novel, the original was a brutal, raw and brilliant book from some one who seams to have truly 'been there'.

Although I enjoyed this book I don't feel it is in the same league as its predecessor. It did not grip me quite the same and the story seamed less poignant. None the less fans of Fante and of hard boiled, gritty novels will enjoy this.

I enjoyed sharing headspace with this (very) flawed-seeming narrator. Savagely funny and dark, but there's a lightness of touch and subtlety with Dan Fante. Lots of bits that had me smiling to myself, while reading it on the bus. And other bits that almost had me averting my eyes. The character is a kind of cultured but ordinary-seeming guy who's, well, having a lock-in at the last-chance saloon seems the best way to describe him. A limousine driver with a past of heavy alcoholism, and a bit of a writer in private. Brilliant - very raw and personal.
