Great piece of hardware,

Western Digital's Passport External USB HD is excellent. This device has a compact light weight design and powers itself via the USB device on your computer. I've had this device for a few months and have had no problems with it - works great for backing up your computer and storing large media/image files. The only reason why I'm giving this product 4 stars is because there is no carry case included.

I really do not understand what others are complaining about. I literally took it out of the box, plugged it in and it worked brilliantly. I didn't even need to read the instructions - just plug and go. Had it for a couple of months now and absolutely not a sniff of a problem. It's light, small, silent, doesn't get hot and I think is a great design.

Good drive but not suitable for all laptops,

This review is from: WD 80GB Passport External USB2.0 2.5 inch Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I bought this because I was running short of space on my 25gb IBM ThinkPad T40.Connected to the USB port of my desktop it works very well - very fast. Operates as USB 2.0 drive. However connected to my IBM laptop (only 2.5 years old) it only connects as USB 1.1 - much, much slower than USB 2. This is despite the laptop having USB 2.0 ports. After a lot of playing around and searching on the Internet it seems this is actually quite a common problem and not just with ThinkPads but Dell's and many other laptop brands. There doesnt appear to be any solution that I can find. I suspect it's down to the USB port on a laptop not quite providing enough power. So beware that this drive may or may not run as the much faster USB 2 on your laptop. I wish now I'd bought one of those external drives that can connect two 2 USB ports to draw extra power. Ah well!
