Phil Manzanera, Phil has a excellent repertoire of live recording and the quality of 801 Live matches every thing he has produced

This is a marvellous album. Its' very rawness and vigour is part of the appeal, as well as some cracking renditions of good songs - TNK is the best version I've ever heard. Eno is in full swing, and the album is a classic of old progressive rock. Don't criticise - listen.

- as others have asked - why was this listed under 'Manzanera' as this is clearly Eno's gig.?

Any road up, this, if you like Eno , is one of the all time greatest albums.

The sound quality is nothing like usual live recordings and in fact sounds, production-wise, more 'studio'.

If you liked what Eno and Roxy Music were creating during that time, (pre-1999 approx - before RM went in another direction) although this has nothing to do with RM this is a perfectly produced and celebratory swansong that has all the feel, the fun, the joyful full-on bonkers reckless nonsense of that era

One of my all time favourite albums, definitely on my desert island disk list

This was an album a flatmate of mine used to have on vinyl. I hadn't heard it for about 20 years when I was reminded of it by something I saw on You Tube. I bought it on CD and it is a really amazing piece of work. The absolute highlights of this album are the first two tracks - Phil Manzanera's opening guitar solo "Lagrima" followed by what is for my money one of the best Beatles covers ever done - their version of "Tommorrow Never Knows". The bass playing here is as lyrical as anything you get in rock; and the arrangement overall is inspired. The rest of the album is not quite as good as those opening tracks, but is still really good.

the entitlage of Manzanera is odd, since the most substantial contributor to the music seems to be Eno. Obviously this post-Roxy Music in-early-days supergroup lacks some of the kinkyness and smarm of the first two Roxy albums, and lacks some of the darkness of Eno's originals. I think anyone who slavers when the idea of a live version of "Baby's on Fire" comes to mind, should also bear heed that it can't be the same wihtout Fripp.
What is present in spades is apparent enthusisam for unpretentious music, played at full belt. I've heard it said that, whilst playing live with Roxy, Eno tended to think about his laundry. There's not much sense of disaffection here though. The versions of "Miss Shapiro" and "Sombre Reptiles" testify to the tightness of the ensemble.
If Eno is too pretentious and portentous, then this is quite a simple way in. If you like Eno/Roxy, but don't know why, this shows you, by what it lacks, just what they have to offer.
