The Best of Bud: Amazing! 5 Jan 2012
By Thomas E. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This four-CD, 74-track import comes from Real Gone Music, a European label that repackages classic jazz and R&B. It's a very low-priced public domain remaster, so it includes no liner notes; you get nothing but the music, but what music it was!

Beginning in the early 1940s, Bud Powell was a disciple of Thelonious Monk, yet his ability to play smooth, lightning-fast, harmonically complex arpeggios set him apart. He became Charlie Parker's pianistic twin, transferring Bird's bop genius to the keyboard. This isn't to say he was a mere imitator, only that he had the same vision.

Besides Monk and Parker, Powell played with all the masters in the classic age of jazz: Cootie Williams, Dexter Gordon, Sarah Vaughan, Tadd Dameron, J.J. Johnson, Kenny Dorham, Sonny Stitt, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Charles Mingus, Percy Heath, Clark Terry, Lee Morgan, Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims, Cannonball Adderley, and many more.

Like Bird, a junkie who abused his body mercilessly and passed away when he was only 34, Bud also died young, though he made it to the ripe old age of 41 before shuffling off this mortal coil. Powell suffered from mental illness as well as alcoholism and a vicious police beating, afflictions that saw him confined to hospitals again and again beginning when he was 23 and continuing until his death in 1966.

However, he was lucid enough in the 1950s, from which most of this compilation is drawn, to produce some of the greatest improvisation ever. It's essential listening for the jazz lover. To quote Bill Evans, "If I had to choose one single musician for his artistic integrity, for the incomparable originality of his creation and the grandeur of his work, it would be Bud Powell. He was in a class by himself."

The albums collected here were all small group recordings (mostly trios) for the Roost, Blue Note, and Verve labels. His sidemen were Curly Russell, Max Roach, George Duvivier, Art Taylor, Fats Navarro, Sonny Rollins, Tommy Potter, Roy Haynes, Curtis Fuller, Sam Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Ray Brown, Ossie Johnson, and Paul Chambers. A full list of the eight anthologized LPs:

Bud Powell Trio (1947)
The Amazing Bud Powell (1951)
The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 2 (1953)
Bud Powell Trio, Vol. 2 (1953)
Bud! The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 3 (1957)
Time Waits: The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 4 (1958)
Blues in the Closet (1958)
The Scene Changes: The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 5 (1959)

Great Bud Powell overview 20 April 2012
By BSBAz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I'm always skeptical about inexpensive compilations from little known companies, but this is a first rate Bud Powell performances and the recording is decent -- if not up to a Capitol or Sony/Columbia standard. Although there are no liner notes there's an adequate song list. Definitely worth the price!

Great collection on of early work at a bargain price 16 May 2012
By Mike Tarrani - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I will not bore you by repeating the excellent details provided by other reviews (especially the January 4, 2012 one), including the detailed listing of albums this set contains. I will, however, gush about the value because what you get are some of Bud's best albums that are compiled into that I consider an essential set of his early work.

What I will say is that the albums in this set have reasonable sound quality, reflect Bud's work across the board during his stronger period, and are albums that folks who either enjoy his playing or who want to study it will find valuable.

Until I discovered this value-priced set of mainstream albums I was more than content with a 4-CD set titled Tempus Fugue-Itand one of my all time favorite albums, Birdland 1953: The Complete Trio Recordings. This collection adds significantly to those and expands my Bud Powell material to include some of his most highly regarded albums.

UPDATE 05 November 2012: There is a 10-disc box set now out titled Kind of Powell. It contains nearly everything this set does, plus much more. If purchased here from a third party seller the price is nearly the same for either set, so it may be worth your while to check out that one as well when making a purchase decision.

Brother Earl Is Back 5 Dec 2012
By The Boz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Many of the original recordings suffered from mediocre to poor recording levels. So, these imports are just a reflection of that situation. Additionally, Powell's performances during that period, live and in a studio, had wildly varying quality levels. The bottom line for this listener is that it a wonderful treat to have so much of this legendary performers seminal works in one package.

Incredible collection 10 Dec 2012
By T. Steinborn - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Finding all of these recordings in one package is a real treat! Hearing his style develop over the period of these recordings is really interesting, and hearing the effects of his different musician ensembles is as well. The sound quality is good, although a bit irregular.
