This is a great book for any student of German to have on their shelf. It is most of use to the intermediate to early-advanced student but even beginners will benefit. In fact, a beginner might find it advantageous in that this book could help them avoid some of the more common mistakes made while learning German.
A legend is provided in the front for identifying all the various symbols (examples such as D. for "Dative", A. for "Accusative", prep for "preposition", (str) for "something" or .s for "reflexive verb"). Each word is alphabetized with example sentences showing the varying idiomatic uses and the english translation. The more troublesome a verb is traditionally for English speakers the more example sentences and translations follow. A wide semantic range of the sample sentences are given along with various tenses. Reflexive verbs are given extra consideration.
My apologies for the lack of the double ss key or umlauts on my U.S. keyboard. For this review I will adopt the Swiss Deutsch double ss and the ae, oe, ue spellings but the book itself uses official German spelling practices and conventions.
Some examples:
1. s. entschliessen zu + D <sich zu etw e.> to decide on (sth)
Ich entschuldigte mich bei seiner Frau (wegen meines Versehens/wegen meiner Stoerung). [I apologized to his wife (for my oversight/for my interruption).
Der Schueler hat sich bei der Leherin wegen seines Benehmens (/Herumbloedelns/seiner fehlenden Hausaufgaben) entshuldigt. [The student apologized to his teacher for his behavior (/his clowning around/his missing homework).]
2. herabsetzen (+ prep) to reduce; to lower: to disparage
Der Laden hat Schuhe im Preis herabgesetzt. [The shop marked down the price of the shoes.]
Der Politiker setzte die Leistungen seines Gegners bei den Waehlern (/in den Augen der Waehler) herab. [the politician belittled the achievements of his opponent in the voters' view (/in the eyes of the voters).]
Immer wieder setzen Menschen diet Mitglieder von Minderheiten herab. [Again and again people disparage members of minorities.]
750 alphabetized verbs get this treatment. Each entry is formatted and typeset more cleanly and clearly than my examples listed above indicate. The authors also provide an appendix of grammatical tables and concise overview of German grammar as well as a glossary of English - German words for quick reference. I've found it so helpful I'm going to get the French, Spanish and Italian versions too.
