Product Description

Product Description

Born Maurice Micklewhite, son of a Billingsgate fish porter and a charlady, Michael Caine's life has been an extraordinary rollercoaster: from washing dishes and fighting on National Service, to winning two Oscars and being knighted by the Queen. With more than 80 films to his name, he has starred in some of the classics of modern cinema: as an action anti-hero in "Get Carter", a Cockney lothario in "Alfie", and a disillusioned alcoholic academic in "Educating Rita". He is an enduring model of British cool. This authorized biography charts the amazing highs and lows in his turbulent ride to fame, fortune and respect.

About the Author

William Hall has known Michael Caine since his earliest acting days, and since then he has been present on virtually all his films, developing a close relationship with him in the process. As a consequence this is an intimate authorised biography that paints a fascinating portrait of a driven man.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of people should know this!, 29 April 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: 70 Not Out: The Biography of Michael Caine (Hardcover)
An excellent biography of one Maurice Micklewhite, soon to be Michael Scott, soon to be Michael Caine, well researched and covering both the significant movies and the private life of one of Britain's most well established and loved actors,

This Bio covers from the humble beginnings battling against the class system thru' the formative years of stage and TV, not forgetting a stint in the army on to his breakthrough roles in Zulu and Alfie, before superstardom in The Ipcress File, The Italian Job, Get Carter, Sleuth, The Man Who Would Be King and many more, not too say that his career has been one long success story, there are also the cringeworthy clunkers, though who knows, perhaps someone somewhere may rate The Swarm or Jaws 3 as classics, these are given coverage and some kind of explanation given as to why they appeared in the first place,

Through all of the highs and lows there is a hard working actor, keen to to do just that, work! he is often quoted as saying that it's all about the work, keeping going, being as diverse and wide ranging as possible and trying to entertain, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would disagree, good films or bad, Michael Caine ALWAYS entertains, the same credo is applied to his personal life and generally he comes across as "a spade is a spade" kind of guy, honest and forthright, occasionally cutting an insensitive but always "up front" be it with friends or collegues, to those who qualify on these counts there comes real respect for both the man and his opinions,

Though Michael Caine has been quoted in times gone by as feeling somewhat undervalued in his homeland, he at least recently has been getting a lot more respect and certainly this book follows the trend, a very worthwhile and recommended addition to the Michael Caine or even general film fans library.

4.0 out of 5 stars I nformative Material, 11 Jan 2007

I thought this book was especially good for letting us know the real Michael Caine - his East London background, his dogged determination to succeed and his progression towards becoming an icon in the movie industry. The revelation about his unknown long lost brother was a surprise. Overall well worth reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Michael Caine's Favorite Subject, Alas --, 14 Jan 2009

This review is from: 70 Not Out: The Biography of Michael Caine (Hardcover)
Oh.... (yawn).... a biography of Michael Caine, hmm? Instead of remembering him for his films or even for this questionable biography -- and due strictly to Caine's own very telling choices -- we now remember Michael Caine for far & away the most revealing work of his entire career. To wit: besides its superb 2-hour documentaries on the most important actors & artists in film history, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) also inserts 5-minute mini-salutes to some of these same Greats in between TCM's various movie broadcasts each week. And several years ago, for some odd reason TCM chose Michael Caine to narrate its latest 5 minute mini-salute to Cary Grant: Grant, the greatest film actor of the 20th Century, as even the most stringent critics now agree. Yet for 5 painfully long minutes Michael Caine salutes ONLY Michael Caine, not Cary Grant -- & indeed, even repeatedly emphasizes his adamant opinion that Cary Grant is entirely forgettable when compared to the likes of Caine! The astonishing egomania of this pathetic act is so appalling that in 2007 TCM finally axed it entirely and, in creating a new mini-salute to Grant, found another star far more famous than Caine who was also -- refreshingly -- a true gentleman rather than one in name only; & thus who readily demonstrated he knew how to remember someone other than himself. Alas, reading William Hall's biography of "Sir" Michael Caine does nothing other than confirm the very same self-obsession of this empty man. Hence just like too many of Caine's movies, this tale's a complete waste of time.
