Product Description

Product Description

Imagine what it's like to be told that everything you enjoy eating is now off-limits: chocolate cake, butter, cream, sausages, bacon or whatever. Well, that's the prospect that doctors deal out to increasing numbers of patients every day. With this in mind, we commissioned "Good Housekeeping" writer, Carolyn Humphries, to devise a diet plan which removed the harmful cholesterol without removing all of the favourite 'sinful' foods as well. Here, Carolyn explains the health issues and then, in a seven-day recipe programme, shows readers how they can change their eating habits without sacrificing good, enjoyable, satisfying food.

About the Author

Carolyn started her career at the top working as Head Chef for a restaurant but eventually switched to journalism where, in 1977, she was able to combine her love of food with her flair for words when she became Deputy Cookery Editor for Woman magazine. Over the years she has freelanced for numerous women's, parenting, education, food and lifestyle magazines as well as for PR companies specialising in food, nutrition and health. She has written over 40 books and has taught both cookery and journalism at further education level. She has written many books for Foulsham and sold over 92,000 books in 2006 alone.

This is one of the first low-cholesterol cookery books I found when trying to change our way of eating, and to date still my favourite. The most useful aspect of this book (compared to many other such low-fat/low-cholesterol cookery books) are the suggestions of what to serve together, which helps enormously. It's difficult enough to fundamentally change the way one cooks, and every little helps! I've found I'm able to use this book every day - even when coming in from work, and wanting to have a meal on the table quickly. However, having used it comprehensively for the past 6-8 months, I'd love to see a successor.....

Not as expected 15 Feb 2007

The Amazon review above says 'Whether people simply want to improve the cholesterol levels in their diet or whether they need to do so urgently on medical advice, this book explains clearly and simply why and how to change to a low-cholesterol diet.' But only for the first five pages!

The next four pages give a 7 day diet plan and the other 170 pages are low cholesterol main meal recipes involving at least 20 different ingredients.

None of this was explained on the webpage and I now feel that I have wasted my money. I was expecting a type of text book explaining cholesterol, how it's formed, what damage it does, how to reduce it, what will happen if you don't etc., which I suppose this book does but not to my satisfaction.

Some of the recipes are useful, so I shall give it two stars.

Anything that keeps cholesterol down is a blessing. Excellent book with very clear instructions and plenty of good recipes to follow for everyone, including fussy eaters or people with dietry problems.
