• Jane Weaver is a rare creature in the vanity-stricken world of female singers, and perhaps with a more generous roll of the dice we might all have heard of her! Serving her apprenticeship in the mid-nineties girl-guitar-pop outfit Kill Laura, Weaver would go on to front Twisted Nerve's Misty Dixon and release her critically acclaimed solo mini-album, "Like An Aspen Leaf".
• It was, however, somewhere in-between that she secured a record deal with Mancunian music maverick Rob Gretton's Manchester Records. Working and playing live with the likes of Andy Votel, Badly Drawn Boy and Doves, the latter would help her to record a number of acclaimed singles and a debut solo album. However, when Rob Gretton sadly died his label went with him and the album never saw the light of day - until now!
• At last, available for the first time on the brand new Cherry Red Records imprint, Bird Records, "Seven Day Smile" – Jane Weaver's debut album proper featuring the effable talents of Doves as backing band - avoids the anthemic arm-wavers, preferring heart-rending songs of fragile beauty. Both haunting and beautiful in equal measure, Weaver delivers a spellbinding collection of songs fusing gorgeous melodies, hypnotic vocal harmonies and nostalgic production with generous measures of Farfisa organ, melodica and understated guitars.
• Deeply personal, musically adept and heartfelt in the extreme, from the heart warming opener 'Slow Song' through to the luscious 'You're A Riot', this album will seduce and entrance you - melting all but the cruellest of hearts. Format:Audio CD
I've been doing a few reviews of late and suddenly realised there was music in my life that actually did mean a lot more to me than those which I'd been spending time writing about on Amazon or wherever else for that matter.
This album may have been released some 4 years ago now, but it's journey to release was hindered by tragedy. I first heard the majority of this material in January 1999 where fresh out of the studio I was presented a copy of the master. Within a few months the record label had commited a run, and it looked like after many years Jane's star was finally in the ascendant.
Jane had recorded the material under Rob's Records, a Manchester label owned by Rob Gretton co-founder of Factory Records, Joy Division/New Order/Happy Mondays et al. The day this album was to be sent to the pressing plant there was a delay with the sleeve artwork. Rob was essentially responsible for signing the requisition of the full pack; CD master, sleeve notes, artwork, etc. The delay occuring on the Friday had forced the decision to courier the following Monday. Sadly Rob Gretton died of a heart attack that same weekend throwing his commercial operation into turmoil.
What followed were years of uncertainty where the recording rights and ownership were brought to question since the label was disolved. Eventually, after significant financial outlay Jane managed to obtain the rights to her material and issued a cut of the CD through her own label, Bird. Being of limited distribution it didn't receive the recognition it was due.
This is truly unfortunate. Though without doubt my opinion is biased, this is a great collection of songs. Ones that I believe still stand up over 10 years after they were first recorded. I recommend people buy this (and her other CD's obviously!), it's a great sampler of Janes's talent. Standout tracks for me are 7 day smile, not the only person, and starglow - use the Amazon mp3 preview or itunes.
Jane is my Sister, and she'll hate me for writing this but over the many years her achievements have filled me with pride and love. And now though the Manchester thing has been and gone, and her contemporaries; Elbow, Doves, BDB have gone on to much bigger things, she is still a creative soul constantly reinventing herself and producing great music.

Having been recorded in the nineties and unreleased due to contracting type issues, it's good to finally hear this album.
Songs like 'You're A Riot', 'Starglow', and 'Seven Day Smile' featuring Doves have been released before but are hard to find, and each of them is pure class.
Jane Weaver excels at honest, emotional, and quite dark songs, in the style of Cat Power I would say. 'Once You'd Given Me Up' and 'You're Not The Only Person That I Used To Know' illustrate this, while 'Gutter Girl' and 'In Summer' show a more frivolous side to her writing.
I have waited a long time to hear these songs and I couldn't be happier - they're diverse, intelligent, creative, and highly listenable, and I can't recommend them enough.
