5.0 out of 5 stars Great practical advice, true to the title, 19 July 2010

This review is from: 7-DAY DATING AND RELATIONSHIP PLAN FOR GAY MEN, THE: Practical Advice from the Gay Matchmaker (Paperback)
I found this book a few weeks back just as I was about to mess up another relationship only a few weeks in. I loved it! Easy to read, sincere, practical, no-nonsense, light-hearted but also challenged me to take a good look in the mirror. I felt Grant genuinely wants to help men understand and appreciate themselves and put their best foot forward. I think this book is useful for men of all ages and backgrounds.

3.0 out of 5 stars No real plan, 7 profiles of obviously bad daters, 13 Feb 2012

This review is from: The 7-Day Dating and Relationship Plan for Gay Men: Practical Advice from the Gay Matchmaker (Kindle Edition)
I was really excited to read this book, especially since it seemed to be written by a reputable guy with a successful business. The book is a very quick read--I read it in about three hours. It's written in a very easygoing, humorous, and conversational style, which I liked for the most part. Despite having a few good stories from the dating trenches, I do not think this book provides a real plan to succeed in gay dating.

The book is really a collection of stories that author has collected over the past 20+ years running his matchmaking service. He profiles some of his most typical dating-challenged men (e.g. Victor Victims, Sammy SexMachine, Arthur Apathy, etc.) and provides very generic advice on how not to see one's self as a victim, sleep with someone on the first date, or be apathetic. Most readers, however, will likely not fit into these cookie-cutter profiles. Moreover, the generic advice and activities feel like space-fillers and do not push readers to take a deep and thoughtful look into their own dating lives and personalities. The book could be stronger if it offered more specific and action-oriented advice and strategies to better understand one's own dating strengths and weaknesses. Finally, a third of the book is just recycled material from the author's Gay Ask Alice from the mid-1990s. These letters are not organized in a coherent way and just seem like they were added as an afterthought to make the book longer.

I bought this book after a short lived period of "getting to know one person," things started off great then they started to take a turn for the worse until I got the dreaded, "I am not ready to be in a relationship" "I think we would be better off as friends." I haven't dated in 3 years because I wasn't ready, emotionally! I met a person online and we met several times we both work in the same industry and had the same interests and even at the beginning wanted that elusive LTR at least until recently. He changed his mind on wanting to be in a relationship, at least that's what he told me, and I took it as a way to find myself. This book has enlightened me in so many ways about myself and what I want from a partner. Thanks to The Gay MatchMaker

But guess what? Were all busy and important and value our time. That doesnt give anyone the right to waste someone elses time. Not being interested is one thing. Leaving a man youre dating in limbo with no communication is another. It only takes a minute or two to make a quick call or send an e-mail or text message, even if its just to make the other guy aware of your current busy schedule and to let him know you want to reconnect when the smoke clears. "e;
