Britain's greatest pop diva, Dusty Springfield was also the finest white soul singer of her era, a performer of remarkable emotional resonance whose body of work spans the decades and their attendant musical transformations with a consistency and purity unmatched by any of her contemporaries; though a camp icon of glamorous excess in her towering beehive hairdo and panda-eye black mascara, ... "Live At The Royal Albert Hall" on DVD and CD is an ecstatic dream come true for Dusty's fans not only because it captures the legendary singer in fine voice and at her most lovely and joyous since returning from a long hiatus in the mid-70s but simply because apart from her 1966 and 1967 black and white TV series for the BBC which have since been (partially) recovered by the station, it is the only full concert given by Dusty in her long and luminous career known to still survive in the archives. Unbelievable but true.
Dusty's singing changed so much over the years it seems futile to debate when exactly she was at her vocal peak. Certainly, 1966 was an early peak when her voice was at its most searing and powerful whether she was tackling a big ballad or a torchy soul number. But then, the legendary "Dusty In Memphis" happened only in late 1968 and from thereon, Dusty began developing the softer, breathier and more delicate side to her singing voice, which effectively transformed her from 60s belter to mature pop stylist by the end of the decade. Still, many fans cite 1972/1973 - on the evidence of her performances on "Cameo" and private collectors' tapes of TV appearances given at the time - as another period when Dusty's vocal craft had possibly peaked in terms of control, flexibility and phrasing. By 1978, following a long break from singing, the new Dusty voice may have mellowed, but like good wine still retained its honeyed edge and spark. That's the voice we hear on the Live At The Royal Albert Hall Concert performance given on 3 Dec 1979. For me, that's the third and (possibly final) vocal peak period I would assign to Dusty until the time she made her final album and public appearance in 1995.

Dusty Springfield, "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" DVD and CD were probably going to be the last Dusty Springfield projects in which Mr Michael Gill would be involved. He was given the responsibility some years ago by Dusty Springfield to remaster her back catalogue. Mike, who very unfortunately sometimes went unnoticed, but obviously not by Dusty Springfield, carried out her wishes with the expertise and professionalism he was known for. Thank you Paul Howes for working beside him and providing your own very special professional advice. Mike was always very grateful to you.
Having initiated the idea for this DVD/CD, unfortunately Mike Gill's untimely death has not allowed him to see the project through to its completion. They are both wonderful productions and, as usual, the lady herself is just spectacular. One must have both the CD and DVD in their collection. They are absolutely superb. Very sadly we lost the wonderful person, but thank God Dusty Springfield's voice will never be lost.
I also dedicate this review to Michael Gill, because without you Michael the DVD/CD would only have been a dream. Thank you my most dear friend. You will always be remembered and remembered too for being the ultimate perfectionist, something that Dusty Springfield very early on discovered you were.

An album taken from the live DVD of the London Concert from the Royal Albert Hall. Includes bonus tracks not featured on the DVD, in particular 'Baby Blue' a great floor thumping disco track with superb backing vocals from Vicki Brown, Lavinia Rodgers and Simon Bell.
Most of Dustys hits are here sung superbly considering its a live Concert. A bit of chat too from Dusty.
'All I See Of You' brings the roof down along with 'Hollywood Movie Girls'.
Another must buy for your collection

Well Worth The Wait 29 Oct. 2005
By Music Maven - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
26 years after Dusty Springfield appeared in concert at the Royal Albert Hall, someone FINALLy picked up the ball and release a CD and DVD of that momentous night in 1979. Since this is the only "live" album in Dusty's repertoire, it stands out in its unique showcase of the extemely talented, bright, witty and charming English "Queen Of Pop".

This is one high-energy live performance - there are no sagging moments. Dusty works her butt off - no breaks for sleep-inducing, self-indulgent egotistical monologues about her career. Dusty just keeps on giving till it hurts. Of course, most of the Top 40 hits are there in the form of a long medley; but, Dusty also treats us to some new songs - namely Natalie Cole's "This Will Be"; Karla Bonoff's "Lose Again"; and, the definitive rendition of Peter Allen's "Quiet Please(There's A Lady On Stage)".

Although some of the arrangements seem dated(no surprise 26 years after the fact), Dusty's voice never sounded better. For a woman who nearly always buried her fine voice in Spector-esque "walls of sound", it's a revelation to hear her unique voice right there up front. Not before or after her masterpiece "Dusty In Memphis" have we been treated to listening to the purity and versitility of her magnificent voice without tons of reverb and double-tracking.

As if Dusty's fine singing and choice of material wasn't enough, she gives us large heaping spoonfuls of her witty, charming and shyly engaging personality - something we were never privvy to unless we knew her outside the studio.

This album was worth the 26 year wait - it's that good. If you're new to Dusty Springfield, might I suggest you purchase "Dusty In Memphis", "Simply Dusty" and this album. Those 3 albums are all you need to catch up with us who have been fans since the beginning, when she was the only female member of the first wave of the "The British Invasion".

Having known Dusty and being in this music business more years than I care to say, I can truly vouch for the fact that, on this album, you get ALL of the wonderful components which made up one of the finest pop singers ever to open her mouth and heart . There'll never be another Dusty Springfield. And, we will miss you forever, Ms. O'Brien.
