soul & jazz protest classics! 7 Jan. 2013
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I'm shocked that there aren't any other reviews for this excellent compilation. Then again, if you just type "People Get Ready" as the key words, you're gonna get several dozen other listings before this one pops up. But if you've mangaged to find this listing and see this review, I'd encourage you to order this CD. It was released by Warner Jazz in the UK in 2004 and is well worth the money. Most of the songs were recorded between 1967 and 1974, during the Vietnam War period, but one track "Martin St. Martin" by Terry Callier is from 1978. Most people will have heard the last track on this CD, "Compared to What" by Les McCann and Eddie Harris, but chances are the rest of the tracks are new discoveries, at least most of them were to me, and I have bunches of soul and jazz compilations from this era. The CD comes with a nice little booklet that includes a nice essay by Kevin Le Gendre and reproductions of the original album covers that had these songs on it.
I see that Amazon has posted a track listing ... but they neglected to tell you who is doing these songs! Well, here you go:
1. Eugene McDaniels
2. The Freedom Sounds
3. Oscar Brown, Jr.
4. Freddie Hubbard
5. Rahsaan Roland Kirk
6. Yusef Lateef
7. Oscar Brown, Jr.
8. Jimmie & Vella Cameron
9. Terry Callier
10. Carmen McRae
11. Eugene McDaniels
12. Les McCann and Eddie Harris
13. Marion Williams
14. Max Roach
15. Les McCann and Eddie Harris
