Renée Fleming and Jean-Yves Thibaudet make the kind of dream team that could sell almost any programme in almost any venue, and not just because they each rank in the first division of their fields of voice and piano. They enjoy a real relationship as artists that has grown over the years through their involvement with the two Spoleto Festivals of Italy and America. And it positively shines through this CD, which glows with the sheer joy of shared musicianship and fellow-feeling. Most of the songs are standard repertory--by Fauré, Debussy, Strauss and Rachmaninov--but with some fascinating unfamiliar items from a late romantic figure poised for rediscovery, Joseph Marx. And although Fleming doesn't always read them with the depth or intensity of the very greatest recital singers who sacrifice beauty for truth, the beauty of the voice here is far more than pretty packaging. It serves the text imaginatively and exquisitely. And Thibaudet, although a brazenly flamboyant personality on stage, makes a committed and supportive partner when you hear rather than see him: more than an accompanist but not competitive--in fact, a perfect partner. The result is the most pleasurable disc I've heard in months. --Michael White

renee fleming is in gorgeous voice and thibaudet is her fine accompanist. the songs are well chosen, some which will be very familiar and others not so well known. however, it is fleming's interpretation that ultimately makes this album. i personally like the tone of her voice, her vibrato is wide and virtuosly sung, especially in the upper register. and the swooping between notes that others do not favour (i think it's called portamento) i find lovely and very well judged. a fine album.

We all know that the night is a time of magic, of freedom, of ecstasy, torment - and even sleeping. All these aspects are caught in this fabulous programme, more often dwelling on the first listed qualities, in a balmy climate. However sleep itself gets one of the most memorable lyrics, in a Rachmaninov song of that name, where we are told: 'Broad, broad as its two wings, and as light as the darkness of midnight. Impossible to divine how, where and why it takes us, on wings that are still, and shoulders that do not stir'. Remarkable words indeed, from one F. Sologub ... If it seems an odd place to focus on, it nevertheless is a large part of this disc, I think, enjoying the poems and the universes they evoke. None are finer than the opening Verlaine settings by Faure; a brief excursion into his late, elusive style is provided by Soir, all too short, before returning to his perfectly formed youthful joy in Nell. The Debussy settings move into a markedly sensual domain, even blatantly erotic in the Chansons de Bilitis. The two composers' treatment of Verlaine's Mandoline are quite contrasting ... In these songs Renee Fleming is arguably a bit too ripe-sounding of tone, as other reviewers have noted, combined with a tendency to use portamento on notes with little or no vibrato, which is a mannerism she has; her voice is very beautiful, having a lissom fullness, and is incapable of harshness, in fact it is a bit like landing on an eiderdown of a thickness to cushion any fall. She has a complete command of the full range, matched by the keyboard virtuosity of Jean-Yves Thibaudet. In some numbers he really takes off with a Horowitzian velocity and edge - the last of the four Joseph Marx settings, Pierrot Dandy, being a case in point.Read more ›

These two stars, Fleming and Thibaudet, shine big and bright all the way through this selection of 26 songs arranged round a ‘night’ motif. The first compliment that the disc deserves is for the selection itself. The songs are not over-familiar, and they have been arranged with the most lyrical numbers at the start and at the end of the recital – the Faure and Rachmaninov numbers respectively, with Rachmaninov’s yearning lament for far-off Georgia, a kind of land of lost content, making a particularly impressive conclusion. It is also a pleasure to have Strauss, and even more so Debussy, given to us in their less familiar guise of solo song writers, and almost a greater pleasure to be given anything at all by Joseph Marx.

The ‘night’ theme is not interpreted pedantically. Sometimes the nocturnal atmosphere is strongly present as in Faure’s Apres un Reve, but sometimes there is only a passing reference to night as a background, and we even find night-substitutes in the shape of winter in one case and dense foliage obscuring bright sunlight in another. What is really more important is the artistic variety among the songs and their composers. Most of the songs are lyrics of one kind or another, with a few exceptions notably the two Mandoline numbers. I don’t detect any attempt, by either producers or performers, to highlight national characteristics, and that is all to the good. Such differentiations come through of their own accord and to whatever extent the composers intended. What does not vary at all is the sheer quality of these performances.

Renee Fleming has a truly divine voice, and I find her tone absolutely right and proportionate for these solo songs. Where more volume and power are used, by Thibaudet as well, that is because the composer has written the music that way.

A delightful recording. Beautiful Pianism and gorgeous singing.
There is a debate where this record is concerned, as to the appropriateness of some of Fleming's singing. Personally I like it. Fleming does sometimes sacrifice consonants for tone quality, but I often find with art songs in foreign languages, I don't understand the words anyway, and so look for performances that are more music than song focussed. This record fits the bill. The performances are so expressive you don't need to know all the words to understand what the songs are about. Therefore I give this five stars.

The latest in Fleming's discography is a big disappointment. She sings these arts songs the same way she sings opera arias - complete with swooping, scooping, and crooning. This is especially revolting in the Faure set. I do give the disc 2 stars for the set of songs by Marx, a composer who is unfortunately under-recorded.
