This is a great introduction into Rautavaara's musical journey, from serialism and minimalism, to his own very individual sound world. There are no complete pieces here, simply extracts taken from the full spectrum of his work. His earlier sixties work, such as the 3rd Symphony, is less accessible than his later symphonies, such as the 7th, with its echoes of nature's own symphony of wind, wave and birdsong. This refrain also dominates his spendidly atmospheric 'Cantus Arcticus', with its haunting soundscape of migratory birds amid the desolation of the Arctic marshes. The 'Isle of Bliss', 'Unknown Heavens' are other attractive/accessible pieces, and 'Vigilia' for choir, the only choral work on the album. This is a great springboard to explore more of his work (try Naxos, both good & inexpensive). If you'd like to explore other composers who have sound worlds heavily influenced by the natural world, consider the shamefully underrated Peteris Vasks. What a rich world lies in store! I've had this CD a while and have only just got round to listening to it. It represents, I suppose, a fair selection of the Finnish composer's oeuvre and is, in many ways, something of a discovery (for me, at any rate). I find the music quite "accessible," but not, however, in a Karl Jenkins sort of way (apologies to fans of Mr J.) and certainly rewarding. The disc opens in splendid fashion with his "Concerto for Birds" and each track that follows offers something interesting. I was especially taken with the First movement of his Violin Concerto and the Symphonic Poem "The Isle of Bliss," while the two excerpts from his choral work "Virgilia" suggest that the piece should form a part of the mainstream choral repertory. Give it a try.

I can not believe that anyone who should come across this review does not already know the work of this great modern composer but I really wanted to give stars to this wonderful introduction. If you are new to Rautavaara then this is is an excellent sample and should whet your appetite for a great adventure ahead
