This is another exceptional CD in an outstanding series. The variety of the music strikes you - the alternating plainsong and polyphony of "In Exitu Israel" (written with those two other Tudor masters John Sheppard and William Mundy), the joyous "Hodie Christus natus est", the beautifully contemplative "O magnum mysterium", the almost "foot-stamping rhythm of "Decantabat populos" not to mention the completely dissonant "O salutaris hostia" (a musical experiment or a musical joke ?).
The highlight for me though are the last two pieces "Deus in adjutorium" and "Ad Dominum cum tribularer". They illustrate the real genius of Byrd - his total mastery of polyphony, his ability to express his despair at being a recusant Catholic through his music, perfectly illustrated in the finale to "Ad Dominum cum tribularer" where a gradually growing crescendo allied with dissonant harmonies brings out the full anguish expressed in the text of Psalm 119.
By the end of the CD you are left in no doubt that you have been listening to a Renaissance giant and one of England's greatest ever composers. The singing is worthy of the music simply superb. I would recommend reading the very erudite notes on each piece. They gave me a greater understanding of the music and this enhanced my enjoyment.

It was worth buying. I'm curious about early music, and this simply added to my collection of records from pre classical times

Had not previously hear much of his religious work, but enjoyed it immensely. Looking forward to more of William Byrd's work.

Superb music, superbly performed. This disk affords a rare look at the work of a young William Byrd. It is a must have for lovers of Tudor era music.
