'We cannot despair about mankind knowing that Mozart was a man.' If Albert Einstein could state this in the age of the Atomic Bomb, there is hope for us in our denuded age, saturated with irony, where genuine feeling is scoffed at. Fortunately, the Eder Quartet belong to a different tradition - ripe with conviction, imbued with sensibility.

On this budget disc, the Eder Quartet along with additional violist, Janos Fehervari, transport us to a distant corner of the universe last visited by Plato. His Ideal Forms find their greatest approximation in the cosmic geometry woven out of these five-part harmonies. Melancholy, Joy, Despair, Mystery...all reach an apogee of expression in k.406. Of course, it is K.516 that people will be buying the disc for, whose deep G Minor penumbra obscures his other quintets, sadly, as it must. For here is Horace's 'pulvis et umbra sumus': we are but dust and shadow. A superlative performance wringing out all the heartwrenching sadness within it like blood from a boxer's towel after twelve rounds. Just listen to the unity of those stabs of sound in the menuetto! And the keening note sustained in the adagio. Verily, Orpheus sings!

The Eders' tone is sweet, so that all those long melodic lines yearn as they sing above the pleasantly chugging chords. Vibrato is present but never intrusive. The recording is all you could ask for from late 90s digital techniques, with a nice spread of voices across the stereo space, giving a lovely 'there in the room with you' three-dimensionality. The cello has a lovely bosky quality to it.

Alas, there are no longer critics like E.T.A.

Excellent value 16 May 2004
By Steve Kessell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
It seems that Mozart felt more at home writing string quintets than quartets - possibly because the viola was his string instrument of choice.
This recording of K 406 and 516 is warm and technically proficient. The harmonies and melodic style of K 516 are really excellent. [K 406 is Mozart's arrangement of one of his wind serenades for string quintet, and I think it loses something in the translation.]
While this Naxos / Eder Quartet CD may not be the definitive recording of these two quintets, it is extremely good value for money.

Mozart's Dark String Quintets in a Scintillating Performance 1 Feb. 2008
By Christopher McKoy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Of the three minor keys favored most by Mozart, d, c, and g, it is arguably g minor that brought forth his greatest pathos. This is on fully display in the two g minor symphonies. But Mozart may in fact have achieved his most powerful and poignant use of this dark key in his String Quintet, an excellent recording of which is on offer on this disk. The first movement rivals even the Commendatore scene of Don Giovanni for intense emotional catharsis, an almost visceral catharsis that is achieved by few other composers aside from Wagner. The height of the movement's emotional intensity is reached at about seven minutes into this recording and it provokes chills every time I listen to it. If you are a fan of Mozart's `dark' works, this is a disk not to be missed. (See my listmania list, "The 'Other' Mozart: The Dark Pathos of the Incomparable Austrian Genius."
