5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product 14 July 2011
This simple device can effectively loosen up your calf muscles. And when your calf muscles are tight, they keep you from pulling your foot up. So the question is, how much stretching does one have to do to really make the leg muscles more flexible?

Well, according to the book, The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution, which has painstakingly gone through all the randomized controlled trials comparing static calf muscle stretching to no stretching in order to get to the bottom of things, the most efficient way to get the job done is to hold a stretch position for twenty seconds, do it four times daily, three days out of the week (Knight 2001). There are other combinations of hold times and frequencies that will work, but this way is by far the most efficient way (if you look at the table in the book, you'll see what I mean). Using these guidelines, you will gain about 6 degrees in 6 weeks.

I liked this particular device more than others on the market, mainly because it's adjustable. Therefore, when you start becoming more flexible, the board can be slanted higher to give you more of a stretch- so you can continue to become more flexible. A straightforward, solid product, I recommend it to anyone who needs to stretch out their ankles.

3.0 out of 5 stars Brick and board, maybe? 24 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase
EDIT: A year after I posted the review below and this item has stood the test of time. It still looks as good as it did on day 1. As a runner and climber, this gets used several times daily - easily my most used bit of kit. For that reason I would now give 4.5 stars.

I didn't think much of it when it first arrived. My feeling was that I could perhaps get the same effect from a piece of MDF and a brick or two or doorway, albeit a little unsafe. However after a week or 2, I have found that I do get some fair use out of it and it has got me thinking more about my achilles tendon and calf muscles. I do a little running and other sports, and found this provides a good deep stretch, maybe even safeguarding me from future injury.

Could I get the same effect from wood and bricks? Probably, but it wouldn't be as safe and the wife wouldn't let me store that in the lounge. This is a pretty cumbersome bit of plastic but looks a little less offensive placed in the corner than bricks and wood. At this price I probably wouldn't buy it again if it broke (neither would I be particulary surprised if it did break), but it has taught me some different ways of stretching my lower legs, that I had not thought to do before.

The dvd/video instructions played OK on my PC, got to the point quickly, and showed me all the different stretches. Perhaps just a little amateur in the production.

It doesn't excite me as much as it did some of the other reviewers, but then it is just a slant board. Does what it says on the tin.

Highly recommended. Well made, comfortable and affordable. I have ankle /feet problems and my physio 'ordered' me to make sure my calves, achilles and hamstrings were as flexible as possible. This has made doing the correct exercises very straightforward. I use it twice a day for a few minutes in total & it works without doubt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sland Board and DVD 28 Aug 2013

I would give the board in itself 5 stars, however the DVD is very basic and does not really provide any useful instructions (at least not for me). Therefore, a 4 star rating.

It does what I need it to do and it is great that it is adjustable. Only downside is it is a bit unattractive and not easy to put away, but I hide it behind the bed so no big deal!
