Paying £15 for what looks like packaging material caused bewilderment to my wife, but after reading all the online hype about foam rolling and 'self myo-fascial release' I had to try it for myself.
I wasn't dissapointed...it does exactly what it says on the packaging. Simply press this between a body part and the floor and you are giving yourself a deep tissue releasing massage. i use this to recover from gym related muscle soreness, and injury related muscle tightness and stress nodules.
It can be very painful, but I ma assured this is normal, and as I read somewhere, it 'hurts good'. An example is rolling it on your calves. if that doesnt hurt, stack 1 leg on top of the other to add more body weight...still not hurting? Flex your toes down towards the floor. Scientifically, this is aupposed to trigger the golgi organ that the muscle is under stress and release it, thus giving relxation, massage and stretching.
The down side is that you can't access all areas of your body; its not good for the lumbar/lower spine, and almost impossible to use on abs, traps, and arms.
If you can spare the money and have a reason to use it (e.g tight muscles) I'd definitely recommend you try foam rolling
