After spending weeks researching online, i ended up looking at the Panasonic, Denon, Oppo, Pioneer and Cambridge Audio players. Hassasing the brilliant guys at RicherSounds into replicating my setup at home with speakers and AV Amp. I tried every BD player i had my eye's on. Some say it's an obsession (Like my wife :-) ). But i wanted the best i could get for the budget, and there is only so far you can go with the internet. That only allowed me to narrow it down. So the nice guys at RS gave me plenty of movies, so i could compare and switch between sources on the AV, with all 5 BD players. So, why did i choose the BD651? Picture quality in Bluray was gorgeous, but not much different that the Oppo or the Denon, but better than the Panasonic and Pioneer. I did feel i had better depth with the Cambridge and Pixar movies almost felt 3D in 2D. I did not get that same feeling with the other players. The boot and BD start times were faster than the other players. The DVD upscaling with the Qdeo was by for the best, but probably only slightly over the Oppo. I was amazed how good some of my old DVD's looked. I thought upscaling was a gimmick, but i stand corrected. The Audio again was again a clear winner over most, yet again probably the same as the Oppo. My AV amp does not have 3D support. No worries with the Cambridge, as i has 2 HDMI ports. I had Video going straight to the TV and Audio to the AMP...Perfect solution. The 3D was the best, but i think the Panasonic had the best 3D motion. The Music playback was astounding. The player is perfectly built, looks solid and gorgeous.
Things to be careful of. If you have an AV amp with a Qdeo or upscaling chip, this messes up the Players upscaling, as they seem to counteract each other and create a bit of a messy picture. You need to either set the AV to pass through, or have the video go straight to the TV. The HDMI 1 port is the only port that upscales with the Qdeo chip, so you need to make sure that is your primary Video port. The difference between the two ports is noticeable.
All in all, for the money, i can honestly say i feel like i have got the best player for me and am more than happy with this player. Now all the work is done. I can relax and watch some movies.Read more ›
Stunning picture in blu-ray mode, Upscaling is very good and presents a very watch-able picture. 3D is excellent too ! AND You can play your music source (iPod Touch / iPhone) via the dock which is as good as my Bose SoundDock BUT it doesn't come cheap, requing an amp & speakers . . . . . .
This unit is an Oppo BDP-93 internally. The only difference is the dac used is cambridge. If you were to set them side by side open, the guts are the exact same as in the Oppo BDP-93. They changed the cover a bit. Buy an Oppo, get the nuforce up grade.
