Forget the sales figures, forget the magazine album reviews claiming International Velvet was their finest hour, this was them at their best.
This album has an almost magical quality, making you feel like floating away to a mystical world. From the drum beats of Lost Cat, to the dreamy Way Beyond Blue and Gyda Gwen (hidden track), this is an album you can listen to over and over again without getting sick of. Someone once said the sign of a great album is one that ages well, and this is surely one that could be classed as just that.
A must for any fan, it's certainly their best, and counted among one of my favourite albums.

I love Catatonia and I love this album. This is my chill out album as it never fails to relax me. My parents say this album is depressing but they have no taste :-D.
When this was released Catatonia were an average Indie Underground band with 3 failed singles. This album all though not a commercial sucess is one of there best albums (even tho there are only 4!)
Highlights of the album - well they would have to be Painful and Bleed. They are amazing. Low points the 5min + gap between Way Beyond Blue and the bonus track!

This album is one of the best of Catatonia. Why? Because it is one of those albums that you could just listen time and time again without getting tired of it. That husky little bedroom voice of hers haunts and taunts relentlessly so that no-one escapes the magic of the songs! Both angry and melancholic, the songs are reflections of our own anxieties and dreams, so I would say "Buy it!" for life is too short not to enjoy it with good music!

This is near perfect pop music - as beautiful and as flawed as icicles. Twelve short, sweet, sharp songs from the plaintive pull of Lost Cat to the heart pull of Painful through to the almost terrace chant of Sweet Catatonia and the melting Calippo sweetness of the title track. Way Beyond Blue shines with all the coruscating splendour of sunshine on frozen glass. Cerys' voice pulls at your hearing like a demanding child...this music must be paid attention to - so many flavours, so many delicious melodies. For Tinkerbell is a prime example..spiky guitars embrace Cerys' flying vocal lines, springing out like a Jack-in-the-Box, gaudy but never tacky, colourful but never garish. Way Beyond Blue was a criminally overlooked debut from a band with a fine pop sensibility...it soars and sings like birdsong on a Welsh hillside!

If you liked 'International Velvet', this album is definitely for you. All the tracks on this album are excellent, the best being 'You've Got a Lot to Answer For', Cery's humurous evocation of a possible pregnancy.

Two years before Catatonia exploded in popularity, this debut album was released. The style is similar to their next two albums, if a little more intricate here. It doesn't show the all-round quality of 'International Velvet' (and Cerys somehow doesn't sound quite as Welsh here as she's sounded on their recent stuff!) but this CD does have some gems. 'You've got a lot to answer for', 'Sweet catatonia' and 'Way beyond blue' are the highlights of early Catatonia. 'You've got a lot...' is the best, as we witness Cerys at her most humorous as she sings us through the scenario of a possible pregnancy: 'My DNA'll be past it's sell-by date...'. Sweet - check this album out.

I've always enjoyed this album and found it to be even more listenable than it's follow up 'International Velvet'. This reissue is fantastically good value. The 'remastering' sounds great with fuller sound to me, also it's not too loud like many remastered releases. The bonus CD which many will be coming for is twenty tracks long and features several tracks which I haven't come across before, even though I've owned a number of releases. I especially enjoyed the live versions, a combination of BBC session tracks and concert recordings. The written introduction by Cerys is also a concise likable read.

A really sombre album by Cerys and the team. This was never really that publicised or lauded with praise but the songs are beautiful! `Lost Cat' is one of my all-time faves, a good timbre and catchy beat. `Way beyond blue' is another triumph that I don't ever recall hearing as a chart release but again it is soulful and moving. A real mellow album that deserved a lot more attention than it got. You can sit back and relax, a treasure.
