Pros:

This stereo is good and compact.
I purchased it in the wood finish and it looks pretty smart too.
The volume and sound quality are good for its size.
Bluetooth and NFC pairing straight forward and easy.

Cons:

The lead that comes with it is pretty short maybe 1m so either it goes near a socket or you need a extension.
If you're fussy about audio then it's not going to do the job. Obviously over Bluetooth you have additional compression which limits the quality. However, I just wanted something at a reasonable price that I could sync the music on my phone with when I walk through the door. For that it's perfect.

I'd really recommend this as a radio to go in the kitchen or another small room.

The manufacturers sent me this unit to try out and review. I think it is excellent, and for its size and price it gives remarkably good sound.

It is solidly built and I like the look of it very much, with a slightly retro wood-effect case and a simple, nicely proportioned look. The unit is compact but not really a portable speaker: it doesn't have a battery so it has to be plugged into the mains and it weighs about 1.25kg. It's more of a fixed sound system for use in a living room or bedroom, although it's very easy to unplug and move it if you want to. It has a good quality FM radio which has 10 easily stored presets, a 3.5mm jack input (with a supplied jack-to-jack cable) so you can connect almost anything to it, and of course a Bluetooth receiver. I found pairing extremely simple and the range is good - up to at least 6 or 7 metres indoors, including through walls, so it's ample for domestic use. The controls are easy to use and the whole thing is very simple to set up and operate. (It doesn't have a remote control, but if you're using Bluetooth you can obviously control what you need to from your phone or other device.)

The critical thing for a unit of this sort is the sound quality, which I think is excellent. It has a rich and well balanced sound with a bright, hiss-free treble and an exceptionally strong bass for a compact unit. It will go louder than my ears can take, and even at this volume there is no audible distortion so it will easily fill a decent sized room with very good quality sound. I have tried it on everything from 16th Century choral music through solo cello and viola da gamba (which really tests a unit's bass response), symphonies and string quartets to The Who, Roy Harper and London Grammar. It performs very well on all of them.

The August SE50 Bluetooth Boombox with FM Radio is a Bluetooth speaker system. Through this speaker you can play music/audio from your Bluetooth enabled devices wirelessly.

This speaker arrived very well packaged and in perfect condition.

In the box you will find -

- The speaker/FM Radio unit
- AC power adapter
- 3.5mm Jack plug Aux cable
- Instruction booklet

The 2 x 15 watts boombox speaker is solidly built and measures 300mm x 95mm x 100mm, weighing 1.238kg so a good size and the wooden-like design with LCD screen at the front definitely gives it a stand out look. It also has rubber feet so it is firmly situated on whatever surface you put it on.

At the back you have the power on/off switch, the 3.5mm audio in socket and the AC power socket. You will also find the FM aerial here. All the function buttons are situated on the top and are -

- Select source (FM Radio/Audio in)
- FM station +
- FM Station -
- Bluetooth connection
- Volume +
- Volume -
- Play/Pause/Preset stored radio channels
- Memory

When switched on the speaker is in Bluetooth pairing mode by default.

To pair up with a Bluetooth enabled device you just press the Bluetooth connection button until the Bluetooth symbol appears on the LCD screen. Scan for devices and it will come up as 'SE50'. Upon connection the speaker will beep. You can now play your device audio through the speaker. Very user friendly and easy to connect.

To go into FM Radio mode you just press 'Source' until a blue FM icon flashes on the LCD screen. You can tune in and store up to 10 FM Radio stations by using the 'FM Station + and -' buttons to adjust the frequency by 0.1 MHz steps.

I bought this on the strength of good reviews but was disappointed. The sound is ok but lacks the brighter tones. The radio is poor and I couldn't pick up any channels even when located next to my hi-fi radio with a thin wired antenna which picks up channels clearly. The bluetooth worked well though. I've connected it up to my computer for playing music. Look elsewhere if you need a decent radio.

It's ok. Expected it to sound a lot better than it does, as I bought it on the strength of the reviews. I've had cheap computer speakers sound better than this. Not the best for brighter sounds, and everything sounds too muddy and muffly. Would save my money in the future and buy a more expensive speaker.

Regrettably, not a recommended purchase and for reasons cited a number of times in reviews here: poor radio reception, the clock needs resetting if you ever unplug/switch off. The Bluetooth connection is also unreliable. Such reasons may be linked to its substantially discounted price. Look elsewhere for a better technical deal!
