Product Description

Product Description

This stunning officially endorsed coffee table book commemorates the 50th anniversary of Tottenham Hotspur's famous League and Cup Double in 1961 the first 'Double' achieved in the modern era of football.

Beautifully presented within its own real-cloth slipcase adorned in silver with the book's title and the iconic badge worn by the team during this historic season, this lavish collector's item showcases previously unseen behind-the-scenes photographs and memorabilia and tells the story of the season through original newspaper cuttings, tickets and match programmes.

This outstanding volume has been put together by the editorial team behind the Spurs Opus. Created with the full co-operation of leading figures, including star player Cliff Jones, and the official approval of Tottenham Hotspur FC (coupled with unique access to the historical archives at White Hart Lane), this sensational publication is the focal point of the club's 1960/61 celebrations which began at the start of the 2010-11 season.

The 1961 Double was truly a remarkable feat given the competition the team faced that year. Unlike the current football scene anyone of 10 teams had a shot at winning the league, and every top-flight team fancied their chances of winning the FA Cup! Great entertainers, and led by the great Danny Blanchflower, Spurs won their first 11 league games a record that stands to this day.

''A remarkable book''
-- Cliff Jones, October 2010
''A splendid book, A treasure trove of pictures, stories and memories... Quite superb.''
-- BBC Radio London's Nick Godwin, October 2010

This book is a must have for all Spurs supporters. This is the team that made my dad a Spurs fan and by doing so made me follow the boys from WHL. It is a really nice collection of images, paper cuttings and commentary from the Welsh wizard mk1 Cliff Jones - watch the old tapes and you'll see what Bale could become! I had the great pleasure of getting my copy signed by the great Cliff and his fellow double winner Terry Dyson making this even more of a treasure. If you love Tottenham and the way they play then take a look at this book as it is a great tribute to the team that Sir Bill built with one thing in mind - to play great football, a tradition all Spurs fans have kept in their hearts ever since.

This is a well-produced in-house coffee table book that, for an old-timer like me who watched all the double year home games, is a great piece of instant nostalgia. There are lots of photos, many of which are entirely new to me, and good detailed chapters about players. Each match gets a summary and the whole thing is put together with quality. I recommend it to any Spurs supporter who wants to know about this great year in our history, or wants to relive it. I shall be buying it for my brother's next birthday too ....

I was too young to have seen the great double side in action. My first visit didn't take place until 1978 but my Dad, and later my Father-In-Law, would often tell me how great the double side was. This season, for every home match, Tottenham Hotspur have been reprinting parts of this book in the match day programme. Every home match I would read these snippets and promise myself I would buy this book. Finally, after the match against Stoke City, I took the plunge and ordered the book. It's a decision I have not regretted in the slightest.
The book, as we all know, tells the story of Tottenham's double winning side through interviews, newspaper reports and photographs. To me it's the photographs where this book excels. Having been a regular visitor to White Hart Lane in the days of The Shelf and the original West Stand it invokes superb memories of the days when I started to go. The story itself is compelling and beautifully produced. I recommend this book not just to Spurs fans but to any football lover. On the day I write this review Spurs are playing Real Madrid in the second leg of the quarter finals of the Champions League. 0-4 down from the first leg, this will be Tottenham's final game in the Champions League this season and possibly for a few seasons to come. But win, draw or lose tonight I will take comfort in the grand tradition of the club that I support and this book will help ease the pain when we go out of the competition tonight.
