Book Description

3 Aug 2012
To celebrate the release of her novel Barefoot on Baker Street, Charlotte Anne Walters undertook the task of reading and reviewing one of the original Sherlock Holmes short stories every day until she had completed all 56. The reviews were posted daily on her blog and attracted viewers from all over the world. The reviews are full of humour and Holmesian insight, ending in a score out of ten for each story. This book contains all 56 blogs plus additional material including reviews of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's four Holmes novels. Although it was a pleasure for a life-long Holmes admirer to re-visit the stories, trying to do this on top of holding down a busy full-time job and family commitments was a big challenge - resulting in some stressful but comical moments detailed in the blogs. Even Mr Walters couldn't resist throwing in a few comments of his own. Charlotte is donating all her royalties from this publication to the Undershaw Preservation Trust, a charity striving to protect and restore the former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - saveundershaw.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Always personal and entertaining 21 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback
After submitting her novel "Barefoot on Baker Street", Charlotte Anne Walters set herself the task of re-reading all the short stories in the Canon, one a day, and writing about each of them on the same day for her blog at [...]. For the book publication as "56 Sherlock Holmes Stories in 56 Days" she has added her observations on the four long stories. Her remarks are often amusing, occasionally thought-provoking (why so little protest about the uncanonical back-story for Mary Morstan in Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes"? I suspect it's because so much else in the film is defiantly uncanonical), and always personal and entertaining. She seems unaware that the text in the "Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes" is American, and differs in several instances from what was (and ought still to be) the standard British text. And I can assure her that marriage between first cousins was and is perfectly acceptable in British law - and church law, if it comes to that. Royalties from the book go to the Undershaw Preservation Trust.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining 20 Sep 2012

The great thing about books like these is that you don't have to agree with the author's views and opinions to enjoy it. The stories are examined (although not too closely...this after all is a fun read not a scholarly tome) and opinions given which are obviously personal to the author. Along the way we get to know a little of the author's home and work life and how she approached the task of writing her own Holmes novel 'Barefoot On Baker Street'. This gives the reader a great insight into what makes Ms Walters tick and adds to the enjoyment of reading these reviews. I would love one day to see someone review 'The Stockbroker's Clerk' and mention the oddest line in the whole canon! One day maybe, one day. This is a great book to dip into as are most books of this type and I award it 5 stars for the sheer fun of it....and the recognition of the hard work that went into creating it.

5.0 out of 5 stars So entertaining, a must read for any Sherlock Holmes fan! 6 Aug 2012
By lisa, birmingham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I read this, not really knowing what to expect, but as a Sherlock Holmes fan (after reading Charlotte Walters other book Barefoot on Baker Street, i became a convert), I decided to give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised at how thoroughly entertaining and contemporary this is. It gives a modern slant to Holmes and one which makes him even more appealing. Just how intelligent Holmes is comes as no surprise but to view him in modern day terms of computer speak and technical jargon makes you realise just how quick thinking and observant he is. This makes him a very attractive proposition indeed! It is even possible to see the close relationship between Holmes and Watson from a new and different perspective.
