i love this record.
it really makes me think. perhaps it helps that im in a particularly jolly frame of mind right now, but its having quite a profound effect. sorry, im rambling...
this is somewhat of a concept album, iv decided. maybe you'd agree. it does help that i find the story of the steinway piano and the cadillac quite compelling. i heard him talking about it on jarvis cocker's radio6 show, and also heard 'seeing the car' at the same time. (read the piece on the cargo records website for more on that; cargo being the uk label that his licensed this record from andrew's skyscraper music maker imprint). the music itself stands quite assuredly on its own, however. the above reviewer says he cant play the piano - this is nonsense. andrew wk can play the piano just fine in almost anyones estimation, im sure. i mean, the songs go all over the place, but its wonderful. the subtle additions of engine noise add something too, without being overdone. that is, it still remains an album of piano improvisations.
for a point of reference, there's something about the melancholy, exuberance and menace of this music that reminds me of 69 love songs by the magnetic fields. but there's no witty lyrics and no arch instrumentation, just piano. also, its somewhat driven along by an idea, both in its creation (so it seems) and in the listening. as it plays, i find myself thinking about the 55 cadillac, about him being stuck in manhattan, about the steinway piano he bought at the same time. lots of things.
very satisfying.
