This set comprises everything that Sony has in the vaults from 1963 not already issued. This includes one side of outtakes from The Times They are A Changin, the best part of four sides of Dylan's concert in April at Town Hall NYC, and two sides of a later concert from October at Carnegie Hall. There are also tapes from the Basement at Gerde's Folk City, from the home of Eve and Mac McKenzie and from radio and TV broadcasts including a couple of tracks from the March on Washington at which Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream' speech.

The historical interest of this material is great - Dylan is pretty much in full protest singer mode, and he is making his way in the world, playing to 1000 people in Town Hall whereas the past year he had been playing to audiences of dozens, and clearly there are more people yet at Carnegie Hall. He is still singing occasionally personal songs. He seems to be in great form wherever he goes and the cumulative effect is very powerful. There are few tracks of songs that haven't previously been released - it is doubtful that Dusty Old Fairgrounds or Dylan's take on That's All Right Mama, or East Laredo Blues or New Orleans Rag would of themselves be strong inducements to invest in this set - though they fit in well and add variety to what is otherwise quite repetitious (there are quite a few takes on Blowin In The Wind, Bob Dylan's Dream, Masters of War etc).

The sound quality is very good on the studio outtakes and on the Town Hall concert sides. Otherwise it is somewhat variable, taken from tapes that have not always worn well. And some of the Carnegie Hall material seems to have been taped at too high a level of the machine to cope with. But it's all highly listenable.

And of course it is on vinyl, so it will wear and decay.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Source 19 Dec 2013
By Thomas E. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
There are two 50th Anniversary Collections of early studio and live recordings by Bob Dylan that Sony has so far released in Europe, both of them containing music that never before had an official release. They are intended to circumvent EU regulations which force copyright holders to forfeit intellectual property rights 50 years after a work is produced (70 years beginning in 2014), thus allowing it to enter the public domain.

"The Copyright Extension Collection, Volume 1" covers songs produced in 1962 and "The 50th Anniversary Collection: 1963" does the same for the following year. Sony reportedly manufactured just 100 copies each of the four-CD "1962" set and the six-LP "1963" set and sold them only in Europe.

However, these rare recordings are now widely available online (in unauthorized digital format, of course), so you shouldn't have to pay hundreds of dollars for bootleg copies on vinyl or CD. The quality of the sound is generally very good, though because many of these songs are informal rehearsals and outtakes, there's some studio chatter, false starts, abrupt endings, coughing, and other noise. Still, they offer invaluable insight into Dylan's creative process as well as a lot of pleasure.

The 1963 collection was taped during "The Times They Are a-Changin'" sessions, at Gerde's Folk City, Town Hall, and Carnegie Hall in New York City, The Bear folk club in Chicago, the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC (during the historic civil rights march), on various radio and television shows, and in private homes. Nearly all are solo performances with guitar and harmonica, though there is occasional added instrumental or vocal accompaniment. Needless to say, all are acoustic.

A complete list of the titles and timings of the 73 tracks follows:

1. Eternal Circle - 2:59

5.0 out of 5 stars Another incredible Vault Clearance! 17 Dec 2013
By Martin Gayford - Published on Amazon.com
All great stuff - slightly variable sound quality as it comprises a variety of recordings, from The Times They Are A-Changin' studio outtakes to the March On Washington performances (where you can hear traffic and wind in the background!), but all classic material in the best available quality. Also, it's great that this is a vinyl release. I just hope Sony continues to issue these sets for the coming years...the prospect of a 1966 set is quite mouthwatering..!
