This film is for anyone who likes a film to keep them guessing right until the very end. You will never guess the ending. I thought it was superb. If you enjoy this , then get The Hide, another classic in this mould.You wont be disappointed with either. Five stars from me !

I wont bother detailing the films plot or the extras on the disc as the amazon synopsis tells you everything you need to know going into the film, and to go into any more detail may end up spoiling this excellent little british thriller.
I rented this from work because the sleeve design and a quote on the back led me to believe this is along the lines of saw, however that would be misleading as this is a much smarter film than thatand while becoming fairly brutal in places features non of the over the top gore of that franchise, if anything this feels more like the cube films, which is to say intelligent and gripping, a film which certainly keeps you guessing right up until the end (which was a slight letdown after everything else in the film but not enough to ruin things.)
The print is razor sharp on blu-ray, but as a film with a group of people in a room for an hour and a half you may wonder if the added expense of blu-ray really is worth it, the disc is great however and does not seem that much more expensive than regular dvd so i may just splash out as I really enjoyed this film, and its the kind of film i really wish we made more of in britain.

'Exam' is a British psychological suspense thriller that released theatrically in 2010. It premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2009 and was met with favourable reviews.
The movie tells the story of eight candidates who have reached the final stage of a selection process to join a mysterious organisation. The final stage consists of an exam where the candidates must answer one question within eighty minutes and at the same time obeying certain rules.
I agree it's interesting and exciting, which the film is at times. It starts off in an intriguing and stylish way and really gets you thinking. But the problem for me was the middle portions of the feature where the momentum nosedived due to a lack of progression and gripping moments. The movie does get back on track towards the end with a build up of tension and then climaxes with an unpredictable twist. The twist was good, however the end result was too easy for an exam that was made out to be a complex one.
The DVD cover indicates that the movie is going to be a violent and gory affair, which is not the case. The cover is what made me rent the DVD as it grabbed my attention.
All actors perform well but the show-stealer is John Lloyd Fillingham whose character is called Deaf.
The direction provided by Stuart Hazeldine is impressive as the suspense was fine. He could've worked on the middle portions of the movie to make it more exciting.
Though the movie is British, it has an American feel to it.
The background music score provided by Stephen Barton and Matthew Cracknell is perfect for the feature.
The 'Exam' is worth sitting but is passable (I failed).

After a nicely handled 'snapshot' introduction to them going about a few seconds of preparation, we are introduced to the eight ambitious candidates as they take their seats for the titular Exam. Colin Salmon makes a suitably harsh speech as 'The Invigilator', laying down some ground-rules, and then leaves, only for the candidates to try to address the first question of the exam, and find themselves utterly stumped. The rest of the film is a tense, very well written suspense piece as the candidates try to work out how to pass the exam, and power struggles erupt between the members of the group. The set design is nicely and cunningly handled, their seemingly boring one-room location offering a few unexpected surprises, and the characters themselves are a frequent delight, with Luke Mably's 'type A' personality 'b*stard' giving a truly memorable performance of bravura. It's a consistently interesting and engrossing thriller in which the character reveals and speculation needed to propel the plot are divulged at just the right moments to keep the momentum fast, and to throw in doubt and suspicion exactly when needed. Some cunningly nasty and mean-spirited tricks are played, and the characters' actions all feel believably driven by their personality types.
The ending was something I found immensely satisfying and a nice twist from the norm, and although some of the reasoning behind the events feels a little flimsy, it works in its context.

Exam: 8 candidates, 80 minutes and one question. Who wins? You dec... oh, no, you don't, actually.
They enter a windowless concrete bunker and take their desks, while an armed security guard takes position and in walks the invigilator (Colin Salmon, sounding very much like Jean-Luc Picard). What is the job they're going for? Will we even find that out? As he continues, he tells us that, in terms of who goes away from this with a contract of employment, the next 80 minutes will determine the next 80 years of their lives... 80 YEARS?! You don't even get to retire?
Exam is a dialogue-heavy piece and would work brilliantly as a play. It's very intriguing but I can't go into more detail about the film because it would give it all away and the whole point of watching is see how the candidates deal with their situation. And how! Most of the cast get a fair crack of the whip in the script and there are dark times ahead as the work through every possible permutation to get to the answer.
It's difficult to single out one cast member from the rest of the mostly unknowns but you get to learn just enough about them all to justify their presence in a script, a script that names the characters just by basic descriptors, so one's blonde, one's brunette, one's white, one's black, one's brown, one's Chinese, one's dark(-skinned) and one's deaf... well, not deaf as such, just doesn't say a lot. And top marks goes to writer/director Stuart Hazeldine for his directorial debut, since this is the type of film where anyone could easily paint themselves into a corner and not know how to get out of it, but not only does he manaage that, he also comes up with, what I can only describe as, the perfect ending.

A few people take an Exam...They are given a lecture before the exam starts..They are left with a blank sheet of paper, and a pencil/pen..The point is, there are no questions... Read more
