Rodeny Bewes co-wrote and starred in Dear Mother...Love Albert from 1969 to 1972 in between the Likely Lads and Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads. The idea of starting each episode with him writing home to his mother was apparently inspired by his real letters home to his own mother.Bewes plays Albert Courtnay, a young northener working down south as a sweet salesman and living in digs.Garfield Morgan (The Sweeney) co-stars throughout as Albert's long suffering boss at the sweet factory and there are many other familiar faces including Sheila White,Geraldine Newman and the late Liz Gerbhart (Please Sir/Fenn Street Gang).

Whilst nowhere near as funny as Whatever... (Bewes and co-writer Derek Goodwin were no Dick Clements and Ian LaFrenais) the series did have a lot of charm, mainly due to Bewes himself. As with much of ITV's 60's/70's comedy output, the plots and sets are very simple and the acting pretty broad with the feeling at times that there wasn't much chance to rehearse.I suspect that if you weren't a fan at the time or aren't a fan of Rodney Bewes, you will, like my wife, wonder what all the fuss is about - she likes Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads, but found this unwatchable after 2 episodes.

This 3 disc set contains the complete series 2,3 and 4. 7 episodes for series 2, 6 for series 3 and 7 again for series 4.Series 1 was apparently destroyed.Due to an ITV technicians strike at the time, series 3 is in black and white, although the disc does contain a gallery of colour stills from series. The picture and sound quality on all three discs is extremely good and any failings, of which there are very few, are entirely due to the original recordings.

Nostalgic value. 5 stars, if one enjoys nerdy, innocent storyline --- which I do!
