...but only 250 you can actually make?,
By E. L. Wisty "If you hear about C. P. Snow exp... (Devon, UK) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: 501 Must-drink Cocktails (Hardcover)
It's a half decent book, arranged in chapters according to main ingredient (rum, gin, vodka, whisky, tequila, wine/champagne, others). The only problem is that quite a large proportion (getting on for half, I'd say) contain highly specialist ingredients you are not going to be able to get down your average supermarket or off-license/wine merchant and would need mail order. (Ever heard of Peychaud's bitters? No, nor had I.) Bit of a risk to spend large amounts on such obscure ingredients you might not even like.
It's quite a large, chunky book, padded out somewhat by plenty of white space and photographs, but as a result of this and it being hardback, it does have the crucial advantage unlike the other three cocktail books I have of being able to lie it open flat on the worktop for perusal whilst knocking up my concoctions. This makes it the most used of my four books, despite not necessarily being the best in terms of the cocktail selection.

Beautiful book, but wish it had a better index,
By Al "SF2NY" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: 501 Must-drink Cocktails (Hardcover)
This is a very beautiful cocktail book... I often leave it out for guests to thumb through and pick a cocktail. There are many great pictures of the drinks (which give great ideas for garnishes). The format of the recipes is also very simple and easy. It's also very well organized by primary liquor for the drinks (rum, vodka, whiskey, etc.). My only issue with the book is that the index only has drinks by cocktail name, not including ingredients so I can't lookup drinks that use Sambuca or Grand Marnier. The book also makes for a very lovely gift.

Great book for beginners,

This book has alot of very common recipes so if you are just starting out in the food and beverage industry, it will really help you. It has tons of cocktails in it (including manhattan and martini) and it goes over more complex drinks like the white lady. The book is divided by main ingredient (rum, tequila, whiskey, & so on) and then alphabatised so drinks are pretty easy to find. It has lovely pictures and includes very precise instructions on how to make drinks. Like I said though, this book covers some pretty basic and common drinks. If you are looking for something different, I would not recommend this book for you; however if you are just starting out, this book is excellent for you. (PS, I think the same people that made "classic cocktails from around the world" also make this book. So if you already own that book, it might not be worth your while to buy this one. The only difference between books is that 501 cocktails has MORE drink recipes in it and cocktails from around the world details which specific bars make the best drinks.)

This book is worth buying just for the beautiful pictures alone! I also like the simple recipes. A very good book!
