5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended for upgrading SKY+ box HDD, 4 Jan 2010
This review is from: 500GB WD ATA133 7200rpm 16MB Hard Drive (Electronics)
I upgraded my Sky+ box with this 500GB HDD, and everything works totally fine, not noisey at all. Would recommend this drive to upgrade your Sky+ box, which is very easy to do. Just replace the HDD and do a full system reset and wait about an hour.

I had one of the original 40GB boxes which was tiny and soon filled up, not ideal for family use, 20 hours storage soon fills up.

Now I have more than 10 times the previous limit, approx 250 hours (!) Makes a big difference and no longer have any issues recording and time-shifting for the whole families needs.

This upgrade has brought a new lease of life into an old box and is even better than the new PVR3 boxes which have 160GB, but actually only have 80GB of personal use as the other 80GB is used for Sky Anytime. A nice feature but pity owners don't have the option to decide what they would prefer, Sky Anytime versus more storage space for own use.

If you have an old Sky+ box, get frustrated by the lack of space to record, then you won't regret this drive to upgrade. Just do it and enjoy the freedom to record what you want and watch when you want, as it was intended, not how much space do I have left!

3.0 out of 5 stars Damaged but works, 24 Dec 2009
By Mr. J. Rudge - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: 500GB WD ATA133 7200rpm 16MB Hard Drive (Electronics)
When I opened the antistatic bag I found that the IDE connector had been crushed and the plastic skirt was broken. However, all of the pins were still straight, so I went ahead and tested the drive which appeared to be fine. I have now installed it and it works great. Just hope that whatever happened to it in storage/transit has not affected the drive mechanism, and that it will last! I would have given a 5 star review if the product had been undamaged.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works In Sky Plus Box, But not perfect., 16 July 2010
By A. Thirkettle "Andy.t" (Finedon, uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: 500GB WD ATA133 7200rpm 16MB Hard Drive (Electronics)
This works with a skyplus box, but it gets hot and the fan go on full often, which means its quite noisey. oh yes its not easy to get it to work either...ie. first you have too insalize the harddrive in a computer and make shore theres 'no volume' and its set to 'basic disk' then put in sky box, or alternatively go to google and type 'sky plus upgrade' and then find a program free to download called COPY+ this is made for tranfering info from a sky harddrive to another replacement harddrive which is easy if you have a caddy for external attachment of harddrives. If this sounds confusing then dont try it.. but if you get it right it can leave you with all your current TV stuff and setting in a new larger skybox harddrive, beware that you can not use fat32/other format in a computer to format or set a volume to a sky drive, there drive are all encripted in a special format and without COPY+ you are stuck. it tolk me a day to figure all this and quickly learnt it is not as easy as other reviews state.

Hardware full system reset.
All your Recorded data will be Erased.

Switch off the digibox at the mains power socket.

Press and hold the left and right navigation buttons on the front of the digibox.

Switch on the digibox at the mains power socket.

Continue holding the buttons in for about 20 seconds.

When the green circle on the front lights up and spins, press the Select button.

The recording logo lights will spin backwards and the full system reset starts.

It may take up to 5 minutes to complete.

Note that this should NOT be necessary on a new Digibox. Only on a used one. If it IS necessary, then you have a used Digibox.
