I bought this drive to add more storage space to the Xbox One.

In June there will be an update to xbox one to allow USB drives. I have the update now as a beta tester so bought this drive.

So far it works fine and loading times seem slightly faster than they are off the xbox internal drive.

This is a good drive to buy if you own an xbox one and want to expand the storage space.

The drive works well so far (less than a week's use).
However I note previous reviewer mentioned that the transfer rate was below par averaging on 40-45mb/s.

I found the same with mine, this is well below USB3 specs. By chance I decided to swap the USB3 cable from my old 1TB WD element drive and the speed shot up to 80 - 90Mb/s.

Furthermore when I used the old cable on an older WD element drive (the one I swapped the USB cable with) and plugged it into my new Samsung LED tv, it should just pick up the USB drive, but in this instance, Samsung although detected the drive but no playback was possible.

My conclusion - the cable is sub standard. Amazon should alert customers to this. I'm reluctant to send the drive back as it now has my data on board, I loath to get another cable on ebay which cost between £5 - £10.

So beware.

The hard drive has a nice and simple design and comes without any of those horrible virtual cd drives or badly designed and unremovable encryption tools. It performs well over USB 3 reaching 70-90 MB/s on sequential writes.

Unfortunately the cable it comes with is substandard and the drive would often connect as a USB 2 device or disconnect when gently jolted. Replacing the cable fixed this problem. WD needs to fix this but even with the cost of a new cable it is still cheaper than many competitors' dives. Therefore if you're planning on buying this you should expect to have to spend another £5-10 on a decent cable.

1TB: Supplied NTFS formatted with a couple of auto run files for Windows (which I think is trial backup bloatware) but of course the drive easily reformatted for MacOS X which took about 12 seconds with Disk Utility (MacOSX extended journaled giving a usable space of 999.51 GB). Using as a TimeMachine disk for a 250GB SSD system drive so should hold a few years of history and space enough for some installers.

The drive is all hard black plastic with a matt finish apart from a glossy narrow top seam. Lacks high-friction feet to stop sliding about instead just four hard dimples moulded in to the lower case.

The cable is 45cm long (including connectors) and the connector for the drive end is the newer Micro B USB 3.0, a long flat shape with a notch to one side which. More common USB 2.0 cables will not fit so make sure you don't lose this one. I have a number of portable drives some of which travel with me and I always unplug the cable from the drive to prevent strain and breakage on the case socket in transit however this means the cable can easily be left behind which is a pain because of the micro B 3.0 socket means finding a substitute at your destination is less likely. You can buy them online.

In use visual: The white led next to the usb port is continuously on when idle and flashes during activity and also flashes when main system is sleeping. I always think this activity light would be better placed at the opposite end to where the cable connects or make it visible on the top surface but WD for years have always put it next to the socket, cheaper that way.

The hard drive is nice and compact for taking it wherever you need to. I'm not going to write about how fast this drive is to the nano second, just know its much faster than USB2, which is good. I only have 1 warning for people who want to use it how I intended to use it, which was to have ALL my media (films, pictures, music, etc) on one drive, then plug it into my LG smart TV and have everything to hand through my TV. I found that a lot of the films were very jerky and un-watchable therefore to overcome this I had to split the drive into 2 smaller partitions of about 500GB and 1 large partition of about 1TB and all the films went back to being watchable. I assume this isn't the hard drives fault, its probably the TVs USB controller not being suitable for such a large drive, therefore the drive still gets 5 stars. Just to clarify, the jerky film thing was only when it was connected to my TV, when it was connected to the PC I didn't have any problems and didn't need to partition the drive.

I am always happy with Western Digitals HDD quality but this one surprised me. No additional power supply made this USB 3.0 device extreme small and super portable. Smaller (though slightly thicker) than my iPhone 5s. I am using it currently for my MacBook Air via USB 2.0 and I'm impressed with the speed already.

I don't like HDDs but they are a necessary evil. I already own the older model for the WD Passport which still work well - though for some reason it always tells me that it has 5 GB occupied even then freshly formatted - I guess the bad sectors start to add up...
I didn't have any serious problems with them by which I mean I never lost any data but I did stumble across a couple of undeletable files of which I was able to get rid only by formatting the HDD.
This older sibling is not far from that one. Only the other day it stopped working in the sense that it kept telling me that my folders were empty even though they weren't. Then I restarted the PC... and the HDD was not discovered anymore. Then I plugged an unplugged in the same USB port, but still...silence. Only after I changed the USB port I was able to access it's contents. Also, I recently had to deal with exactly this HDD but in 1TB format which was kind of dead, and by that I mean that its average writing speed was less than 2 kb/s. It took half a day to write a couple of songs on it. Nothing I tried helped and the SMART test clearly shown that the writing head was heavily misaligned with no chance of easy fix. - My friend had to throw it away.
So yes, not amazing HDDs but they do work for some time. I guess you can push something like 2-3 years of moderate use out of them if you take care of them too. Also, I don't recommend anything larger than 500 GB since anything larger would mean serious problems in case of complete data loss.
Regarding read/write speeds, it's quite average - nothing impressive there.

Update after one year of use:
The HDD is now dead and has been sent for repair to WD. It became slower and slower until it completely died.
