I upgraded my Sky+ box with this 500GB HDD, and everything works totally fine, not noisey at all. Would recommend this drive to upgrade your Sky+ box, which is very easy to do. Just replace the HDD and do a full system reset and wait about an hour.

I had one of the original 40GB boxes which was tiny and soon filled up, not ideal for family use, 20 hours storage soon fills up.

Now I have more than 10 times the previous limit, approx 250 hours (!) Makes a big difference and no longer have any issues recording and time-shifting for the whole families needs.

This upgrade has brought a new lease of life into an old box and is even better than the new PVR3 boxes which have 160GB, but actually only have 80GB of personal use as the other 80GB is used for Sky Anytime. A nice feature but pity owners don't have the option to decide what they would prefer, Sky Anytime versus more storage space for own use.

If you have an old Sky+ box, get frustrated by the lack of space to record, then you won't regret this drive to upgrade. Just do it and enjoy the freedom to record what you want and watch when you want, as it was intended, not how much space do I have left!

Damaged but works 24 Dec 2009
When I opened the antistatic bag I found that the IDE connector had been crushed and the plastic skirt was broken. However, all of the pins were still straight, so I went ahead and tested the drive which appeared to be fine. I have now installed it and it works great. Just hope that whatever happened to it in storage/transit has not affected the drive mechanism, and that it will last! I would have given a 5 star review if the product had been undamaged.

Cheap Sky+ upgrade 5 Mar 2008
By Kade
I bought this in order to upgrade the capacity of the hard drive in my Sky+ box. The current Sky+ boxes come with a 160gb hard drive of which only 80gb is used for personal space. Fairly large but quickly used up if you use your Sky+ box for timeshifting. Timeshifting is basically recording everything you want to watch and then only watching what you record when you want to watch it as opposed to when it is broadcast. Now I never have to worry about running out of space. When I got it, I just hooked up my old Sky+ drive to my computer, copied the data and then hooked up the new drive and copied it there, slapped it into my Sky+ box, worked first time. The only negative point that I have noticed is that when I am watching something and then fast forward or rewind, I can hear the drive seeking, it's actually quite prominent. But it does only happen when doing this and since there's no sound from the TV when you're doing this anyway, it doesn't spoil the entertainment and at any rate, it's still quieter than doing the same thing with a VHS and not much worse than doing it with a DVD. Definately recommended for this use.

Just what you'd expect
It's hard to review a piece of kit like this ... it was easy to install (but that was down to the case design) ... it works, it doesn't make a disproportionate amount of noise. Read more
