If you're looking for a 'How to Write' book that strokes your sensitive artist's brow and coos soft words of zen-like platitudes in your tender ear... you're not tough enough for this book. If liberal swearing and late-night-comedy-club humour makes you come over all peculiar and want to write an angry letter to The Daily Mail... this is not the book for you. If, on the other hand, you want no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is, tough-love advice that makes you laugh while inspiring you to go off and Write Stuff Right Now - well, strap yourself in for a rollercoaster ride you're gonna love.

Chuck Wendig is passionate about writing, and this shines through on every page. He tackles just about every aspect of The Craft, breaking down each section into easily-digestible, numbered lists. His advice is the stuff all writers NEED to hear (as opposed to simply what they WANT to hear) and even if some of it riles you up there's a little piece of you that knows it's because he's RIGHT. He's that cranky but wise uncle who says stuff that shocks all the straight-laced grown-ups... but you know they're pearls of wisdom.

You want a tree-hugging, aura-cleansing mentor who'll give you virtual writing cuddles when the going gets tough? You'd best steer clear of this book. But if you're after a butt-kicking drill sergeant with a heart of gold, who cares enough to want his padawans to become lean, mean writing machines - Chuck's your man.

Just make sure your nan's not reading over your shoulder at the time...

A book with very little in the way of innovative ideas to improve your writing. It really consists of very basic and common sense writing advice for beginners presented in a way that I think is supposed to be humorous. If the advice given was actually new, interesting or innovative then I could handle the the slightly vulgar, mostly ignorant humour. You will find all of the writing advice in here online for free, and probably presented with a lot more intelligence than you will find here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Offensively stupendous 1 Dec. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Things to know about this book before you buy it; there is a lot of swearing, the imagery is "out-there" (aka visceral and hilarious), the advise is some of the best in the business, it is non-judgemental (but brutally honest), and did I mention that there's a lot of swearing? If that bothers you I strongly suggest you find your writing advice elsewhere. Or if it does but you like being offended then buy away - you will not be disappointed.

I previously bought and read Wendig's 250 Things You Should Know About Writing, and both books work well independently. Together however they form a fantastic source for aspiring writers everywhere. A working pen-monkey himself, Wendig has been there, done it, killed it, stuffed it and sold it for gold, so he does know what he's talking about. I've also read his fictional works and can safely say that this man knows how to write.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in the craft of writing who isn't afraid to stick their head into the rabbit hole (with the aforementioned rabbit holding a machine gun to your face.) Brilliant stuff and I can't wait for more.

And now I have to say that again in at least 20 words: If you write, read this book. Done!

1.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I fell for the good reviews. 7 Oct. 2013

This book had good reviews and halfway through it, I still can't understand why. It's all fluff! There is no concrete, solid advice whatsoever, just plenty of metaphors and swearing. I could have done that myself without spending any money. I'm not even going to finish reading it. Life is too short.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hardcore and hilarious. 29 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It made me laugh out loud on the tube on several occasions, but more importantly, it was crammed full of great advice. And swearing. Loads of swearing.
